It ranks 4th on my areas in Louisiana to live. Might even be tied for 3rd with BR

I forgot about one other thing I learned over there....and maybe my opinion of this is biased because most of the people I polled were from Allen Parish.

But they had never heard of pastalaya and were appalled that someone had the audacity to replace the rice

I like both for what it's worth, but it just furthered my formation of the opinion that they are closed minded.

Allen Parish is a big rice area, but I don’t think I know a single person in SWLA that doesn’t know what pastalayla is

Yeah it's one of the 4-5 things rotated in the random lunch fundraisers that we have to buy every month.

Every crawfish boil I've been to there involved boiling in clear water, seasoning the outside after cooked and tubs of mustard. That's just an abomination.

Jokes aside, I grew up in BR and live here now. When younger I LOVED it here. Once I had kids my opinion has changed. It's not the worst in BR but it's far from good too. It is almost certainly related to not hanging out with friends nearly as often and focusing on kid activities.

I could live just about anywhere now and I'm indifferent. If it were reasonably possible I would probably move but everywhere is imperfect.

You will be just fine in Lake Charles the same way we all live in imperfect cities. Make the best of it. Find a bubble of like-minded people, raise a family and do your best to ignore the bullshite.

Agreed here.

I love all of the Houston area, the differences in the suburbs is part of the allure for me.

Up in Coles Crossing now and when I leave here I will go back to the Fatherland - Lake Charles.

Just wanted to add another good school for pre-K to 8th grade is St.Margaret's Catholic school. On Enterprise Blvd. Not far from Lake Charles Memorial, where I work. Several of my coworkers send their children there.

I went there. It is not as big as ICCS, OLQH, so class sizes are smaller, which is a positive to me. Students score high on testing. Parents are very involved in the school.

yea st margarets is ok, scores are lower than the others and less sports and activities due to the size.

Sulphur is fricking weird

Watch your mouth.... I grew up there and now live in LC, which means my Sulphur buddies think I'm a sell out and my LC buddies still look down on me.

allen parish is north LA,

and sulphur people are weird and never leave sulphur, if you lived somewhere else...wouldnt have been like that

i know a couple that lived in sulphur and finally moved to LC...night and day difference for them since they arent from here.

We had one rule growing up....you can frick sulphur girls but never ever ever try dating them cause they are crazy AF and will drag you into their little cult they have over there.

Yeah everyone should know what pastalaya is in the area. Wouldn’t say it’s popular with most people using rice.

I didn’t realize there were bourbon and wine festivals. That is very cool.

Rouge et Blanc is the wine festival and a yearly fundraiser for Banners (which hosts a decent series of events through the year)and Smoke & Barrel is the bourbon/BBQ festival. I think they also are behind Rum Revival but I haven’t been to that.

With you and your wife both being from Cenla, you may be interested in the north side of LC. Moss Bluff & Ragley have good public schools and not far from LC. Not sure if you would be going to Cenla much but would shave some time off your trip and you would have much less traffic to deal with. As much love as I see South Lake Charles getting in this thread, I’d much prefer the north or east.

I don't look down on Sulphur, but they do have the whole weird insular culture with their "elites" of the area.

What he said doesn't really make sense with LC but 100% is on brand for those people in Sulphur.

I'm not moving there anytime soon, but I know if I did I wouldn't be welcomed into that weird culture.

Not what it used to be (not that it was ever a large private school like OLQH). I went to St. Margs back in the late 90s and it was great. The hurricane did a toll on it, as it did to much of the LC. My daughter attends ICCS, which is growing decently in size. OLQH will always be king on the block. I loved it when we toured, but we ultimately went with ICCS.

I believe so. And W-M I'd imagine.

The problem with SELA is that the worst area in LC history has developed out there. If they could ever make a small HS out for the Bell City/South Iowa area the population would explode.

Stout explained to me a few years ago about why Iowa is growing, and it's basically the new Moss Bluff.

I hope a school gets built then.

This has been and still is the biggest problem with the area.

They are still governed by boomers and people who want to protect family interests over parish improvement.

Its bullshite and its true about that area.

Spent a year in Sulphur and then bought a house in Holmwood. We did enjoy Holmwood, but it was further away from things then I'd prefer.

Did you know the mayor out there?
