Expensive? You don't know bikes.
Most fat tire bikes are $2k and below. The suspension bikes for hard core trail riding cost more than a new Kia.

Bikes are like cars or anything else, a lot of people only have one and some people have a garage full of bikes for every occasion. Some people ride $500 bikes and some $15,000 bikes.

Built my own a few years ago. Materials cost me around $600 and it was worth every penny and the time.

26' are for short people.

I'm 6'1", not tall, not short. Just not a fan of 29ers, especially on tight trails.

I prefer 27.5 to both. I doubt I'll ever go smaller than that. Definitely can't throw the 29er fatty around, but you can run over anything like you're on a tank, and that's why I have it.
I bar hop and cruise the bull shite trails around Austin on the 29er fatty. Only thing I'm hitting real trails and bringing to Fruita is the 27.5 full suspension though.

I prefer to ski in the winter not go 2.5 mph on a tank.

I'm 6' and road Trials when I was young so I prefer the lightest bike possible on REAL singletrack. My MTB is in SC as I just have road bikes here but this is a picture I found of the frame, it is an ancient Rocky Mountain Team Only Vertex hand built with an HBO Elite tubeset and a wicked painted maple leaf fade.
Mine is all XTR save the Race Face crankset/BB, Chris King headset, Syncros stem/bars/post, Rockshox SID w/only 50mm of travel and Mavic 517 Citrons build on Chris King hubs. It weighs under 19 pounds and is an absolute scalpel.
I have had a ton of different MTBs but this has always been my favorite and the only one that sticks around.

They're for the snow. Cross country skiers hate them, because they tear up the trails. But they're supposedly not bad. My old boss in Colorado would ride into work several miles during the winter with one.

I always thought fat bikes were a gimmick until started reading forums with people from up north. Apparently a lot of people serious about riding use them to train in the snow/mud in winter.
Thinking of getting my first mountain bike next year (if I don't upgrade my tri bike). I can't ever see getting a fat bike down here though. I'll admit I've never ridden one though.
