It’s amazing how people cannot just drink something besides beer/alcohol when they are the driver.

This is not the point of blaming drunk drivers. Even if you drink and drive and objectively aren't at fault (someone else crashes into you, someone jumps in front of your car), the point is not that the alcohol didn't have anything to do with it. It's that the alcohol was in your system.
Statistically, more people with alcohol in their system operating vehicles, more people in automobile accidents, more death on the road. Most of the time that death could have been avoided had someone just not drank.
The barely drunk person who may very well be capable of driving gets lumped in with the drunk person because there is no objective way to measure the acceptable level of alcohol consumption per person because even with a baseline, metabolizing alcohol varies depending on a great many factors.
You may be a person who can drive with a beer in their system, but the truth is we have to have a way to keep people that aren't as responsible off the roadways. The benefit of creating some sort of intricate system based on each individualized person is convoluted and would have a benefit nowhere near what it would cost, both in terms of money and manpower. The result is a baseline that caters to the most conservative amount of alcohol. We can't do any better without wasting a ton of money just for the sake of allowing people to drive home from an even after drinking.
It's much better for society if you have the fear of the law in you and abstain completely.

The captain is responsible but were there no other adults on the boat??..drunk or sober. Where's the parent(s)?
Most obviously dangerous thing possible on a 'toon.

Almost every time I put the boat in the water I fill the ice chest with beer but only drink 2 or three. I just can't relax and let the beers flow as the captain. Whether it's tubing with the kids, wake surfing or fishing, when I'm driving and responsible I'm way too on edge to drink. It's just a lot of responsibility behind the wheel of a boat with a boat full of revelers. Now, if it's just one or two of my friends who have experience on the water I'm much more relaxed.

Boaters be dumb. Passengers be dumb. General public mostly be dumb. Dumb people do dumb shite and people die. Never fails.
Don't be dumb.

When taking trips to the Prop Stop always had one rule… Just one Worm Bucket and water the rest of the day. To much responsibility with people lives and property…
Driving a very powerful bass boat, made sure I didn’t do anything stupid.. Never had one accident and tried to avoid the idiots…
Worst thing that happened was a Buddy was laying over my trolling motor leaning on the foot switch where the prop cut his shoulder..

Holiday weekends were made for drinking on the dock and watching the dumbasses go by. The ramp is always good entertainment too.

That is horrible and I pray for the family.
With that said, I'm from out here and grew up playing on the diversion, Amite and blind River. This is not the time to go down there. So much traffic from non locals, it's not safe.

I'm tired of the responsible drunk driver automatically getting charged/blamed for dumb arse bad luck under the guise that had the driver NOT been drunk, they would have avoided killing the person who was actually responsible for the incident.
This is the problem. Capt. of the boat is in charge of everyone's safety. That's the responsibility whether it be a flat boat or a yacht. Those guard rails are there for a reason.
FOR EVERYONE WHO MAY DRIVE A BOAT IN THE FUTURE. DO NOT LET PASSENGERS SIT OR STAND BY THE BOW.
If a person falls from the bow then this happens. He definitely shouldn't have been at the helm inebriated and also lacking any basic boater safety knowledge.

Good god this mentality is why there are so many boating fatalities in LA.
It is unbelievable to me that drinking and operating a boat is just accepted as a normal thing. A boat owner should not have to stay home on a holiday weekend because they fear for their families lives because of the large number of boaters drinking.. If you are at the controls of a boat your total alcohol consumption should be zero, if it takes a zero tolerance policy by law enforcement to change this behavior I have no issue with it.

I think we'd all be safer with not allowing boat purchases or boat navigation without passing boater safety courses once every couple of years.

The Diversion Canal and Blind River have got to be the most dangerous waterways in the South.
Posted on 7/5/22 at 11:44 am to Breauxsif
There is no shortage of stupidity for some people.

That canal when busy can be difficult to navigate sober much less impaired.

My family has a house on the canal between hill top and canal bank. We’ve spent tons of weekends out there over the years. Whether I’m driving the boat ir one of my buddies is, we don’t drink a drop until we’re docked for the day. Too many idiots to chance it. I would’ve stopped and had the girls move back behind the railing or we wouldn’t go another inch. Hanging over the front of a boat while it’s in gear is insanely stupid and dangerous.
