Is leasing a vehicle actually a good way to do this, long term?

Lower payments, modern features, no depreciation risk to you, ability to upgrade without worrying about selling, and a full warranty.

It should say “Forever payments” and include a * for depreciation risk. You’re essentially paying for the depreciation in your lease payments. Dealers don’t absorb depreciation as they’re hedging on a predicted rate in your payments. They're not giving you any freebies.

$46K for a 10-year-old truck is crazy, and paying a 3-5-year note on one is nuts. You didn’t mention if you’d take on a note, but since you’re buying something that old, I’m guessing that is your plan.

You might want to compare your monthly interest rate costs for a 10-year-old truck with the new one listed above. You could be spending an extra $100 a month for an older out of warranty truck.

2012 to 2016 F150’s with the 5.0 and six speed transmission are very reliable.
188,000 on my 2014 and no major issues. Find one with 90 to 100,000 miles and you will get something more in the price range that you’re looking for.
And still have a reliable truck. I am trying for 300,000 miles on my F150.
So far I have replaced the starter, all the hoses and belts, the turn signal switch, and the blend door actuator on the air conditioning.

$46k in 2016 was worth more than $46k today.

You can get one of these:
New 2026 Ford
F-150 STX

Yes I know and this is the struggle. Newer for the same price is available but not with that trim package and features. Plus from what I’ve read the 2016-18 combo of the V8 plus the 6 speed tranny is one of the most reliable F150s in 20 years. The issues with trucks not pre ‘21 Tundras are ridiculous

Hence why the old truck is $46k

That's a fair to good deal.

Excellent drivetrrain, low miles, no bad habits.

Double check for undisclosed paintwork.

Used trucks are all about condition.

I’m also looking at 21 GX’s which are sweet at this same price point.

Get the GX and buy a small trailer. You’re welcome.

That’s what I don’t think people are getting. Other than the Tundras up to ‘21, every make and model of truck has all kinds of fricking problems based on the engine, tranny, production year, etc. Some years are good..some are bad. It’s “I love my truck..I had to replace the transmission at 100k miles but other than that it’s been great”!

The Tundras were the exception but it’s getting harder to find a pre 21with a decent trim package and lower miles. The ones you do find are more expensive than this F150.

You've been shopping used trucks, most of those commenting haven't.

It is it private-party, or dealer? One owner?

Dealer, one owner, clean carfax. Whoever owned it drove it about 1k miles per year based on emission inspections and it was maintained by a Ford dealer.

I’m telling you…this is a unicorn.

And yes..I’ve been digging into this for several months now and have an idea of what the market is like.

It'll be a gone soon.

It hits the sweet spot. Low miles, in-demand drivetrain, one-owner.

You know this because you know the market.

I traded in a very similar deal- F250 Plat 2022, 19K .

Dealer's son bought it before it hit the lot.

Low-mile, no-story used trucks are indeed unicorns.

The other part o this equation is I have a new 16 yr old so I’m writing a check regardless. The question is write a check for clunker for him or for a new vehicle for me and let him drive my maintained ES350 that’s 10 yrs old and has 150k miles.

If he goes in-person, ready to buy, he might can get a 1 or 2k off, but if there's somebody behind him, ready to buy, he won't have any leverage.

What do you think it's worth?
