It’s a tough conversation
We talked to our dad about it. My brother was more of a hard arse about it. I said to him. One day we are gonna be in his shoes (if we live that long) and I’d hope someone would be gentle with this bad news.
We did remove the battery but Dad would reinstall the battery
So we talked about risking his life by driving and the lives of others. Eventually he understood and it didn’t bother him as much as it did initially.
Pops RIP - you were a good man to all of us.

Mom got in a minor wreck around the time she was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. We took her keys away and just told her the vehicle was damaged beyond repair even though it wasn’t. She was pretty unhappy about it for about 24 hours then just forgot that she owned a vehicle. Sad situation.

My FIL was getting bad. One day he backed into his shed and then hit a mailbox on the same day. He told me what happened. I told him that I'd go look for the mailbox to see about fixing it, but I'm glad some little kid wasn't out checking the mail.

I asked him for his keys and he handed them to me without ever fussing.

Had to do it with my dad. Not pleasant. My siblings didn't have the cohones to admit he was about to kill someone and/or himself. One day it'll be my turn.

Seriously looking at this. Dunno if it’s a viable option yet though.

My grandfather ran off the road one time and hit a road sign. It didn't do much damage to anything visible, but it fricked something on the undercarriage up. This dude called my wife (he was close to her office) had the trucked towed and had her take him home. He told her that someone ran him off the road. He never told my grandmother about it and actually thought he would get away with it.

My grandmother took the phone call from the shop the truck was at and found out everything before he got home. She waited two weeks to bring it up and he lied his arse off. Told her he had broke down and couldnt figure out why the truck wouldn't start.

He is very lucky he didn't hurt or kill himself or someone else.

I had to do it with my Dad. Not easy. He got lost in town. Had no idea where he was or how he got there. Mom gave up easily. She was more afraid of hurting someone. I am 58. I have Parkinson’s. I have already had the conversation with both my sons. When the day comes, and they will know, understand, it is not me fighting you. The Dad you know is gone. Do what you have to do and under no circumstances should you have any regrets.

Pull a spark plug. That’s what my uncle did with my great grandmother.
