Entergy Louisiana customers across the state will likely have to cover some of the $20 billion price tag for new power infrastructure the utility is building for Meta's new AI data center in Richland Parish, an Entergy executive testified at a recent state regulatory hearing.

The utility's director of regulatory affairs gave that testimony Oct. 7 under cross examination at a Louisiana Public Service Commission administrative hearing, contradicting previous assurances from both Meta and Entergy that Meta would bear the full cost of $13 billion in new gas-fired power plants, in addition to approximately $7 billion for new switching stations, solar batteries and hundreds of miles of new transmission lines.

If we can’t trust Meta, then who can we trust?

Typical socialized costs, privatized profits model. They leveraged externalized infrastructure financing onto the ratepayers while capturing the upside on AI compute demand. Masterclass in regulatory capture.

Whichever public officials approved these projects should be investigated. As if our energy bills aren’t high already, we have to help foot the bill for some of the most valuable companies in all of history. Get the bums out of office

It's like Meta has taken over one of the Marcello rackets, buying off State officials.

This really should be the only answer. Meta agreed to pay for it. If they can't or won't now, then the infrastructure simply won't be built. They can change plans to accommodate what they are willing to pay for or end the project due to lack of funds.

Shock headline… actual quote:

“I expect that if there are assets providing value to customers that Entergy would seek to recover the cost of those assets in rates,” he said under oath at the hearing.

Entergy executives, including Jones, testified those updates will save the rest of the utility's customers $4 billion over 20 years.

But when pressed by Tournillon, Jones couldn’t promise that.

“That's not a guarantee of $4 billion,” he said. “That’s correct.”
Entergy spokesman Brandon Scardigli later clarified that the $4 billion figure is based on an analysis of "system-wide benefits ... quantified using complex models of the MISO (regional power grid) system and capacity expansion planning.”

The utility estimates an immediate benefit to customers of $1.9 billion from Meta’s investments in the state’s power grid.

That includes $695 million Meta is paying "toward storm and resilience costs on current customer bills," $140 million toward energy efficiency programs and $60 million to help Entergy's low-income customers, according to testimony from Laura Beauchamp, Entergy's vice president of business operations and strategy.
