Whoever they do this on first is definitely going to die in the postoperative period.
Obviously not only is it risky in the sense of reanastomosing a spinal cord. You also have to anastmosis the trachea/windpipe, esophagus, carotids, jugular veins which in and of themselves are risky procedures with a high morbidity rate. Not to mention the person is gonna have to go on immunosuppressive medications.
Even if it does work, the chances that this has any meaningful functional outcome is slim.
We haven't even mastered the ability to return good function on nerves that we sever and put back together at the time of injury (facial nerve and a host of other motor nerves).
I guess you have to start somewhere, but we don't even have a great foundation yet.

Yeah, i think this is the same guys that were claiming to be ready back in like 2015. Modern medicine is so far from being ready for such a procedure (if it is even ever a possibility).

Holy shite...imagine the Wisdom and experience of your 40s with a body in your 20s...

Surgeons are basically mechanics of the body. But they use knives, lasers and now diamond blades.

There's a downside though. Now you have to wonder if every butterface is a tranny.

You don’t even have to deal with the butterfaces. Just think, 40 year old you has amassed the wealth and wisdom of 40 years, but take away all the strain that puts on your body.
(This is assuming head transplant guy is an OT baller of course.)
So you use your wealth to dupe some muscle bound moron into donating his body. You start the process when he is younger, taking in some orphan boy. You give him a nice lifestyle, all he needs to do is work out and keep healthy. You give him supplements to keep his body in tip top shape (plus a little langiappe to make the transfer go more smoothly and keep him docile.)
Then, when the time is right...BAM! Oh no, he must have ran away, he left this note.
And then the transition begin. You might even be able to keep his face and hair if you like. But once you’ve recovered you’ve essentially extended your life. And now none of the troubles of getting older will plague you.
No aching back or creaking knees. None of the lumps or bumps or bald spots. No wild hairs growing out of your nose and ears.
No no no, you’ve got the experience of half a life of living in the body at peak performance. Virility through the roof.
Now you fake the tragic death of your old body, and have your unknown heir inherit your material wealth.
Live the life of a playboy, a young and ambitious man who seems to have all the knowledge and knack of someone far beyond his time.
You rise fast up the ranks of business and society, this handsome, strong and charming renaissance man.
Hell, you were Able to fly a plane like a pro the first time you got in it. You impress everyone you meet wherever you go.
You are a constant fixture at high society parties and functions, your wit and style are uncanny. Always a beautiful young woman on your arm. Life is grand.
Except, one day, your body starts to rebel...
You know...I think I might have my next story.

As a facial cancer survivor I can confirm your comment relative to severing the nerve and loss of function.

In 2015, Canavaro announced he wanted to transplant the head of a paralyzed man, Valery Spiridonov, onto the body of a dead donor. The procedure, he explained, would involve cooling the bodies to a state of deep hypothermia, before severing the spinal columns using a diamond blade. The next step would be to reattach the blood vessels and nerves, connecting those from Valery’s head to those of the dead donor’s body.

A little head never hurts...

It would be better if they could develop a surgery to remove a person’s head from their own arse, this is a greater threat to humanity.

My highschool girlfriend would be a great fit for the surgery, she sure have great head.
