Summer School Question

Quick version of the story- my son finished his math class with a 71D (he really knocked that one out of the park). He had mostly A's and B's in every other subject and missed a total of 4 days this year. He passed everything and there is even a spot at the bottom of his report card that reads "promoted to 7th grade." His principal is still saying he has to go to summer school. I taught history in the same school district and I've never heard of something like this. So I guess my question is this: can a principal force a student to go to summer school if he passed all of his classes and didn't miss too many days? TIA

I always thought summer school was a myth teachers would use to keep students in line

Get him a math tutor.

Never heard of this for a 71 but in my district they offered free summer school to students whose teacher recommended it or they failed if they WANTED to bc of COVID

This happened to my oldest. The reason being is because we ask for extra papers/curriculum for the next grade and they had a spot open. The principal is our friend so I called her like, wtf is this? My sons teacher was worthless last year, which sucks because they were in school all year. But yeah he had all As and Bs, state scores above with large jump. Also made math club for the grade.

He can definitely use some remediation, so I'm not opposed to the idea of summer school. My issue is that he passed the class, but the principal is telling us he'll fail the grade if he misses more than two days of summer school. I don't want to be the helicopter parent and go in raising hell. I'm afraid that would cause problems with the principal in the long run. His math teacher was straight garbage this year too. She's not certified and is teaching under a TAT that was issued in 2019 and was automatically renewed because of COVID. I'm pretty sure she hasn't even passed the PRAXIS in math because it doesn't show up on the state website.

I don't understand why grade school wouldn't be 70-c passing. Even a D in community college counts, in some classes

There might be a rule about points needing to be earned and what semesters they have to be earned in.

I have and he says there is a “glitch” in the system. I’ve used the same system to put in grades for my students and there is not, nor has there ever been a glitch with it. I even manually figured his grades to be sure and the grades on his final report card are accurate. I think they’re being paid for every student attending, so they’re trying to pack the building. More than 1/3 of the students at the school are being forced to go and many have situations that are similar to my son.

Too busy researching the teachers certifications to go have a civil conversation.

Seems odd that the school would mandate so many kids over what they are calling a glitch in the system.
Sure we are getting the whole story here?

Is it possible he failed the state test for math? Maybe they want him to come in for remediation? We do that in high school because the kids have to pass those tests but that’s not the case in middle school.

They haven’t gotten those test scores back yet. For the LEAP, it’s only 4th and 8th grade test that will prevent a student from moving forward.

Yeah, I had the civil conversation dude. I looked up the teacher’s credentials after we exchanged several emails and she seemed to have the education of a middle schooler herself.

I went to “summer school” in 9th grade when I was going through some family issues and DGAF in school. Was for English Honors class I failed.
I literally spent part of my time there teaching some of my classmates how to read. It was ultra socioeconomic class-shock. Ghetto of ghetto all combined and dumped into one summer school and then there was my lily-white arse. It was fricking wiiiilllddd.
Made some friends and learned a LOT about life. Wouldn’t trade it for anything, it helped make me a better person.

Have you tried putting it in the teacher’s butt yet?

Go to the school and beat the principal up. Show him who’s boss.

Usually summer school is for kids who get an F in a subject for two nine weeks, or who need an academic push in a subject the summer before high school.
Summer school is also different than summer tutoring.
