Agreed. There are a few formal industries left but not that many. I worked for a Fortune 1000 company for a decade before this job and we'd have VPs of departments with hundreds of direct reports wearing jeans to work on a Tuesday.

You don’t think it’s strange to wear a suit “anytime you can”?

I think that was to be interpreted as anytime the occasion supports it.

You aren't wearing a suit to the neighborhood pool with your kids on the weekend, but getting dressed up for work even when you just have an internal meeting should be the norm. Not the exception, IMO.

No doubt. But our industries are a bit different than the ones of the dudes who crow about wearing suits everyday I guess

My job is business casual and less so than I'd like. We are allowed to wear polos and pants May through September and button downs and pants the rest of the year.

It's the official dress code for guys but not really enforced in any way.

My last job was no shorts, flip flops or vulgar t-shirts unless you were working with clients. In that case it was business casual or whatever the customer's dress code was if we were going to their offices.

I was more referring to try hards at the office that wear a cheap suit while we’re wearing polos and button ups or dudes who show up to engagement parties/whatever and are the only person suited up

But my profession and friends/family are probably trashier than yours

currently work in a lab area doing scheduling, other admin type jobs, and filling in for the supervisor when he is out (aka assistant to the supervisor). I wear polo type shirts, casual slacks, and sneakers. Since this is my everyday work wear, should I dress up for the interview?

Hearing you will be at work and this is your work dress... I’d suggest likely going with a nicer shoes and shirt, as minor upgrades without going crazy or seeming out of place but acknowledging you are serious about it.

Does the supervisor wear a suit? That may guide the advice though. Likewise, might suggest either way that you up your game a little day to day unless it would be abnormal in the setting

I would be laughed out of the building showing up for an internal interview in a suit, despite working a white collar job.

Don't be the douchebag who shows up in a suit for a fricking supervisor position. You aren't aiming for an executive position. Wear business casual...at most, maybe a blazer, slacks, and a pressed dress shirt.

Is your suit a neutral color? Can you wear the coat with different slacks? You could run to just about any chain department store and get a decent sports coat for un $100.

Meh. I'm never going to rail on someone for wearing a suit in a business casual environment.

Unless I know the event would call for a suit, I usually go dress slacks and a blazer. But I've been the only guy in a suit before and don't really care. If you have a formal event at a moderately formal place, I'm wearing a suit unless otherwise noted.

For the record, I don't suit up every day...mainly this time of year I'm in slacks and a button down and keep a neutral blue/grey blazer in my office if I need to run to a meeting.

Like I said, you probably run in higher class circles than me. But 90% of folks don’t.

frick no. You're lucky to see my shirt tucked in if I don't have to go to the office.

But an interview is at the very least a coat if not a tie. Always dress above what the job is. Business casual everyday for the job means a suit for the interview. Job at a grocery store or something means business casual for the interview.

The horror.

I agree you don’t want to be wildly over dressed in a tux for a ditch digger interview but heaven forbid he indicates he cares and takes the opportunity seriously by trying hard.
