The Aussies I have had have all been great, very protective and great with kids, very smart and train easily. The downside with them is in the spring when they lose their winter coat that shite comes out in clumps.

Not saying Catahoulas aren't affectionate towards family, but I don't think it is possible to beat the bond between a shepherd and his owner(s). Considering this and the fact that he's looking for somewhat of a guard dog, shepherds really can't be beat imo as long as he's ok with some shedding and a little work.
I'm not saying other breeds aren't capable of doing the job, but there's a reason why just about anyone selling serious protections dogs will almost exclusively use German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois (basically a leaner and less hairy German shepherd with a higher drive/energy level for the most part).
