Thinking about getting a dog. I work shift work and I have a gun for my SO while I'm not home but I know she'd more comfortable with a dog as well. I have a chocolate lab that I left with my parents when I moved and she's great. Was fairly easy to train and she barks at anything unusual.

I could go that route and get another lab, but just wanted to hear some other suggestions. Some of you have likely been in my same situation. Ideally I'd like it to be a bigger breed, less than 90 pounds, family friendly and capable of distinguishing between friend and foe.

German Shepherd, I agree. Had one for years and she was great. Have a lab now and he's been a great dog also. As they get older though, both breeds seem to have hip problems. Both dogs have had trouble getting up down once they got about 8 years old.

Are these family friendly? Was one of the breeds sticking out in my mind.

Not a chance man . I bought tha dog in college at a Ducks Unlimited auction and my dad damn near lost his mind. Here it is like 4 years later and that dog is his world. I moved away for a year and a half after college and she grew much more attached to him than me. He won't give her up now

Great with Your family and kids, and very protective of both.

Grew up with them. Have had 8 throughout my life. Parents used to leave me and sister with their first one as toddlers while they did household stuff. She would watch us and would go get my parents if we needed them. Kept us from hurting ourselves as we wandered the room.

American Foxhound - Breed started by George Washington. We have one as a Service Dog, very smart, great with children, very alert and protective.

A German Shepard is a great option. They're smart, loyal, easy to train, and protective. Most won't get over 90lbs.

Guarantee that the dog you are looking for is at your local shelter.
Bigger dogs are more likely to be at the shelter than small dogs.
