If you're familiar with how to raise/train a dog then it's hard to beat a German shepherd. However, if you aren't experienced with dogs and/or will not have a lot of time to spend with the dog I do NOT recommend getting a German shepherd or similar working dog. They require a lot of both physical and mental stimulation. In fact i'd say the mental stimulation is almost more important. They're really fricking smart and will find a way to entertain themselves if they get too bored. And you will not be pleased with how they go about entertaining themselves
If you can't deal with a high energy dog then an English bulldog should do the trick. They're lazy AF, cuddly and friendly, but also mean looking and protective. Similarly you can get a big arse mastiff. Another low energy, gentle dog that absolutely no one will frick with. Be prepared for a big dog food bill and giant dog turds. Great dogs though. Slow moving and as gentle as can be for an animal that doesn't realize how big it is.
Or just get a wiener dog or two. They won't do shite to an intruder but they're annoying enough to make even the most committed criminal just look for another target.

If you go this route, I would like at the Ole english bulldog. Bigger but same tendencies as an English bulldog

If you want a real guard dog that would be great with everyone living at your house and legitimately wouldn't let anyone into your home until you tell the dog it's ok...Brazillian Mastiff. They take almost no effort to train but require a lot of effort if you have adult guests over regularly. it can be a process to let those guests in the house and you have to educate them on not approaching your dog, letting the dog come check them out, not getting in the dogs face initially, etc. once they learn that/are in the house the dog will be just as good with them as it is with your family/kids.
If you just want something that will bark to alert your wife or kids that someone is there then get any other dog that has been suggested

I have always had rottweilers. Very protective and great family dogs.

Came Corso.
You can't beat it for home protection.
It's an athletic breed of mastiff that bonds with the family and becomes very protective of its family and home.
They are big babies until something threatens their family. The breed is known for completely ignoring pain when it comes to protecting it's family.
They are stubborn though and have funny quirks at time. Mine is very OCD when it comes to where things are kept.

I grew up rotts and dobermans and currently have an 8 month old rottie female. They bond hard with their family and their intimidation factor alone can be a good deterrent.

Shepherd–Husky or Shepherd–Lab mix. We got an 18-month-old female Shep–Husky mix a couple years ago and she is:
• Fantastically good with people and kids of all ages
• Ferocious as a guard dog
At 60 pounds she is, pound for pound, the strongest dog I've ever known. Also, extremely intelligent and trainable.
You may be able to find this combo at the pound--like we did.

German Short-haired Pointer. Best damn dog known to man. Will love you like no other & protect the house. Their bark is extremely deceptive to strangers.

We have a lab mastiff mix who is a great dog, super loyal, big enough and well behaved but would die before it let someone harm my wife. I wouldn't recommend a cane corso mastiff because they can be over the top aggressive. Maybe a rottweiler or German Shepherd would be a good choice. American bull would also be worth looking into.

Brazillian Mastiff.
That is a fila brasilero correct? My dad wanted one but once my mom looked them up and saw that they are supposedly the meanest dogs in the world and illegal in several countries she wouldn't let him haha.
I read up on them and it seems they aren't necessarily mean as they are extremely protective, but it seems if you have kids coming over to play a lot it wouldn't be the best option. It basically said you have a few months to socialize the dog to whoever it was going to be around all the time and it will attack anything else.

Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are amazing dogs. Big enough to provide some security but smart and gentle around kids.

Great with Your family and kids, and very protective of both.
I've read that. Also read they are a twitchy breed? This true?
I got a Black Mouthed Cur mix. Old Yeller is a BMC.
She is a complete knot head. But is trainable and sweet. The pure breeds are used for hog hunting so if you have a cat or other small dog they aren't suggested. They decide the cat is to be hunted? They'll kill it.
But ours is great. Our chihuahua hates her, but she's an a-hole and only likes me anyway.
