There’s a reason they’ve been banning those damn things from buildings in Asia. Those cheap arse batteries are bad news.

I heard the same thing. Only one I have in the house is to run my Christmas tree lights so I don't have a bunch of cords fricking up the ambiance.

Agree.

I researched it too, but was hoping it was fake.

Lithium in an elevator, lighting me up when I'm going down.

Not cool ... suddenly find one's self in an elevator oven, with no way out.

Bad way to go.

Lesson learned. Not riding in an elevator if someone steps in with one of those bikes

I used to be in the e-bike business. Every time I see a post about "Should I buy this no-name e-bike? It's soooo much cheaper than those namebrand ones AND its more powerful!" I try to tell people to stick to the brands that are actually held to regulatory standards and that test the living daylights out of theirs. Few listen.

For those of you who don't want to be Elevator Vader, stick to complete motor/battery/charger systems from, in no order:

Bosch (and the companies that relabel their systems)
Brose (ditto relabels)
Shimano
Yamaha
Pedego
EDIT: I forgot Panasonic, possibly the oldest e-bike brand around. They are GTG too. And I am getting old......

And maybe Bafang, though their warranty support can be iffy.

The first thing you will hear from a no-name brand is "We use Samsung/Panasonic/LG cells, the same as those expensive guys" The cell brand matters a LOT less than the battery management system when it comes to thermal events while charging. The BMS is where all the testing and engineering time goes. The companies above each have more time on their BMS's in the field than the next 5-6 no-names combined.

I remember well. I'd just come out of a month-long coma and logged in to TD to attention whore about it and the first thing I saw was your multi-page thread bragging about dying. You stole all my thunder.

Congrats to both of you on not being dead.
