US homicide rates fell sharply in the early 1990s, a decade that also saw the mainstreaming of cellphones – a concurrence that may be more than a coincidence, we propose. Cell phones may have undercutturf-based street dealing, thus undermining drug-dealing profits of street gangs, entities known to engagein violent crime. Studying county-level data for the years 1970-2009 we find that the expansion ofcellular phone service (as proxied by antenna-structure density) lowered homicide rates in the 1990s.Furthermore, effects were concentrated in urban counties/among Black or Hispanic males; and more gang/drug-associated homicides

TL;DR: Cell phones make defending "turf" less of a necessity for drug dealers, resulting in less violence.

That's an interesting hypothesis.

However, the numbers started to fall well before cell phones were even remotely mainstream.

also the study even admits that many other crimes also fell within the same time frame that probably have nothing to do with cell phones

so yes, it might have had a minimal effect, but it was more of a societal shift based off numerous factors, not just cell phones

They fell as a result on the feds strategically prosecuting gun/drug cases in certain jurisdictions. Look at EBR or Manhattan. When they put resources into project EXILE, the gun crime rate began to fall. Here, they transitioned away for EXILE and focused more on terror and white collar post 9/11. Take a look at the EBR murder rate from 9/11 forward.

On a distantly related topic, I was thinking recently that technology may replace religion in the near future as a tool for keeping mankind's moral compass pointing in the right direction.

Today, many people fear God's punishment in the afterlife to keep them on the straight and narrow. In the near future, it will be possible to basically read people's memories. If I'm lucky enough to live another 40+ years, maybe my kids and other loved ones will be watching my memories during my funeral. That's a much more relatable reason for living a good life with morals than the unknowns of the afterlife effect.

*The reverse brain engineering may also be possible while living but I don't think I'd ever agree to that (even if the 'secrets' are relatively minor).

If they did that they’d see so many boobs they’d be appalled. Not because I’ve seen them in real life mind you, but because is what I think about 80+% of the time

Kind of sad they need to be afraid of fairy tales to make them act like decent people

Well that’s just human nature. Think about it...

Does a child have to be taught to share or taught to snatch?

Humans are evil if left without societal restrictions.

It's basically my only vice and keeps the other vices in check. I guess it's my religion?

As the wise but annoyingly arrogant rival Tommy Tubberville once said, 'Smoke em if you got em'.

I read somewhere that it's because they took the lead out of gasoline. The drops coincided with people who grew up not being exposed to so much lead all the time, 16 to 20 years after its removal.
