Oh my gosh. I just spent 5 minutes (it felt like 15) trying to negotiate with the dog to get off the couch to go into his crate. He was like a limp fish. Every time I tried moving him, he just fell back into his nook on the couch. I tried bribing him with treats and scratches. I tried being assertive, I tried being logical, I tried being nice, I tried pulling him and pushing him from his place . And he always just ended up paying on his back with his tounge hanging out looking pleased with himself.

When I finally got him off the couch, he immediately went into the crate no questions asked. He knew what was up. He was being stubborn because he just wanted to be the center of attention before bed.

Logical, assertive, people do not negotiate with dogs.

Get rid of the crate. Let that dog crash on the coach.

Is he bad if you leave him out ?

He’s like a timeshare. I’m not the owner. I always end up with him for like a week or two at a time every couple of months. I wish I could get a dog of my own but I can’t with my current job.

Well, I don’t want him sleeping on my bed. And if he isn’t around anyone, he’d start getting nervous and start crying if he isn’t in his crate. I wanted to spend the night on the couch (which I’ll almost certainly do for the next few days) but I couldn’t tonight. I just thought it was super funny and my post didn’t do it justice but I feel like most people can relate to stubborn dogs. Little shite knew better

Sadly, I think he does. He knows he's the alpha with an embarrassment of an owner.

Dogs like routines. If you crate train right, nothing can stop a dog from getting to his crate if it gets even a hunch that it's time for bed or you're leaving the house.
