have a solid argument for the best rock band ever in the United States

Opinion, yes. Solid argument, no.

Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Journey etc. were all more popular at the time and are all played more frequently in the US today.

Skynryd is great but The Allman Brothers Band is the best and paved the road for everyone else.

In defense of Lynyrd Skynyrd they faced more obstacles and it didn't help that a plane crashed killed the lead singer. So the band lasted less than 10 years which isn't long enough to see a full body of work. The other bands have been around for decades and have remained mainstream for years.

Artimus also claims he got shot that day. Artimus seems like a good dude, but I don’t think he’s above making shite up. He’s still better than Gary though.

Chris Gaines and his sister Cassie(?) are the ones I think about a lot.
Both were killed in the crash. Seems unfair. Chris had only been in the band for around a year and was probably the best guitarist.

The guy you’re thinking of looked more like Che Guevara than Garth Brooks.

Cassie brought Chris into the band. She was a backup singer, I think, and Ronnie was looking for another guitar player. He found a damn good one in Chris, too.

Coincidentally I stopped by the monument today, off MS 536. You REALLY have to be going there to get there.

I was going to the Jerry Clower museum too but I got lost. I was near McComb and ended up in Picayune before I knew where I was. I wasn't trying to figure it out, just heading in the general direction of Alabama and got here.
