Managers will have to learn how to manage people working from home. I think that is the biggest hurdle. Getting managers to understand that you cannot just follow up on the day something is due because someone has been out of sight for a week. When in the office a manager can pass by many times checking in. When someone is working away you have to change the way you follow up.

If work is being done timely and accurately, who cares where it is being done at?

ETA: Not to mention all the overhead costs you save by having as few people as possible onsite all the time.

The managers of people. They would have to adapt and change is hard. You cannot just manage the same way by having catch-up meetings and stopping by to shoot the shite.

I'm the exact opposite. I'm much more productive when I work from home. Less distractions, and the ability to take a break and do something else for a bit lets me come back more focused and get shite done around the house at the same time.

Well Cent you are more command line based work correct?

I sometimes have to be physically near hardware for specific test cases were troubleshooting.

I've been there too, but as I graduated through the ranks/to other jobs, a perk was that I was no longer needed in front of someone else's physical machine

There are rules for passengers like no talking, no messing with the driver's radio, etc

So you can't strike up a conversation with another passenger while you are sitting in traffic? Seems like an odd rule.

Ya. As long as I have internet access, I can access my systems and the network.

Hell I tracked down a RAT and ripped it and its persistence mechanisms out all from my hotel room in Punta Cana.

Ya, in your case I can understand WFH not being realistic. It's the same way for our Tier 1 techs. They have to be here to interact in person with staff/attorneys. And it's also why myself and the engineers (who can do everything from a laptop with internet) can't WFH full time. It's not "fair" to them.

I can work from home as needed but don't do it very often. I'd go stir crazy sitting in my house all day.

Maybe if our state had better public transportation, residents would consider it.

Probably 3 of the 5 workdays, I do not go home directly from work. At least once a week, I do not head home until about 7pm. Please explain how public transportation works with that? I've got to pack all my needed clothes and supplies and haul them around on a bus?

Well, unfortunately, the supplies I need for my afterwork obligations basically fill up the trunk of a car or most of a cargo area of an SUV, so that bag would have to be at least a very large suitcase. Not real sure I really want to lug that around whatever walk I'd have to make between my workplace and the public bus stop in addition to my briefcase.

While we're at it, is this improved public transportation system going to have routes around to the small towns, say within a 20 mile radius outside of BR?
