The handgun and extended mag on the seat - not illegal.
The handgun serial number - possibly
Maybe he was a convicted felon in possession of a firearm but in the big picture this is a minor offense.
No reason to die over a traffic stop. No reason to endanger the lives of others
He had children.
I just don' t understand why people can't control themselves like civilized, mindful, caring members of society.

He was a convicted felon. Also seemed high but can’t be 100% certain without tests.

Still no need to die.

Doing what he did in that video will get you shot by a cop 10 times out of 10, and rightfully so. That guy didn’t have to die that night, what a stupid thing to do.

My cameras picked up mostly audio with limited video. I turned in an hour of surveillance from 3 of my cameras to LSP.

You can clearly hear yelling and then tires squealing/screeching prior to shots being fired.

Troopers had the area where they marked on the map where the weapon was found taped off before 4am when I was leaving for work.

As a Monday morning QB, the trooper probably could have laid off the trigger once he was no longer being drug by the car, and moved him further from the car before attempting to put him in cuffs.

Regardless, if the guy says there’s a weapon in the car, convicted felon or not, he’s still alive. If he doesn’t try to bolt towards a car with a gun in it, he’s still alive. Resisting, dragging a trooper with your car, fleeing, and the tossing your gun out the window after being shot doesn’t help the case.

The mag dump as the driver drove off will be what gets the trooper in hot water from a procedural stand point. Pretty sure the deadly shots were the pointblank ones when the jackass tried to drive off with a cop hanging out the door.

Lack with most police shootings, dumbass would still be alive had he just complied.

Its hard to tell if he actually reached for the weapon as the narrator of the video said but I look at it like this, he was willing to lie about a weapon, have it in plain sight so he could grab it quickly, and fight with police officers to get away. At that point the police officer couldn’t let him leave the scene. No telling what his intentions were with the gun. He may drive off and go kill someone. Once the officer saw the gun with the situation as it unfolded, the guy left him no choice but to stop him some kind of way.

In my opinion, there’s no question about the first 2 shots being defensive while he was wrestling with someone who lied about a loaded weapon in the vehicle, it being within arms reach, him moving towards the loaded weapon, and then being drug by the car. Emptying the mag as the car drives away, will be what the public is going to question. It could be he was shooting at the tires trying to disable the car from fleeing, the perception of that would look a lot better than shooting at a man fleeing a traffic stop from a busted tail light, which is how some will spin it.

I don’t know their procedures or what they’re taught when handling scenarios like this, the trooper could have handled it textbook.

Pretty much agree with everything you said. They will definitely try to spin it to excessive use of force. The trooper was cordial the whole time before the guy started fighting, the driver seemed like he was handling it well too at first. But once the fighting started all bets were off in my opinion. You don’t know why he wants to get away. I can’t say the officer was even thinking about that though. But when the officer saw the gun he tried to detain him and secure the gun. Guy knew he couldn’t have the gun and was going to jail if he got caught. He took the chance of carrying a gun in plain sight. He was either looking for trouble or trouble was looking for him.

He was being detained, they woukd have found out he was a convicted felon after running his name. So yes he was going back to jail on felony charges, and possibly years in jail.

You just lied and told the cop you didn’t have a gun in the car and then fight him and take off after he sees it.
