State funding source for new Mississippi River bridge looks possible

Note that the bridge will require federal matching funds and possibly even toll revenue. This is about the state funding, which seems impossible to get for larger projects like this or the Lake Charles bridge replacement.
So how do we screw this up? Likely options that have derailed things in the past:
Add about 1,000 New Orleans area pet project to the dedicated project list on this bill and prioritize them over everything else, delaying the needed infrastructure by 40 years (TIMED model)?
Remove existing funding currently allocated to the type of projects in this bill and put it back into the general fund, making this a net zero gain of transportation spending but a net increase in tax revenue (Stelly model)?
Allow the governor to prioritize the projects and screw everything up completely (JBE model)?

An infrastructure bill advanced Monday by the Senate Finance Committee could have major implications for Baton Rouge and the quest for a new Mississippi River bridge.
HB514 by Speaker pro tem Tanner Magee, R-Houma, was initially drafted to levy a state sales tax on medical marijuana, but it was previously amended by Sen. Rick Ward, R-Port Allen, to extend the state’s 0.45-cent sales tax and send those dollars to the transportation department’s Construction Subfund, with up to 75% of the revenues going to complete a list of projects.
A portion of the shifted funds will be dedicated to the construction of a new bridge across the Mississippi River south of Baton Rouge.
“Without something like this, we don’t have the ability to pay for [a new bridge],” Ward says. “Right now, we’re going through the engineering process, but once we finish that, we won’t have the funds to move forward with the project. This puts us closer to actually building something.”
Once the sales tax is extended and fully phased into the Construction Subfund, it’s estimated to generate $375 million annually. However, it’s not yet known what percentage of those annual revenues would go toward the bridge.
Meanwhile, another portion of the sales tax revenues would help fund the widening of I-12 to six lanes in the Florida Parishes, including East Baton Rouge—another potential boost for the Capital Region.
The state’s transportation industry is applauding the bill.
Altogether, Louisiana has lacked more than $300 million a year in additional recurring funding for major construction projects, says Scott Kirkpatrick, executive director of CRISIS. An additional $375 million in annual funding, such as that offered in the bill, would allow the state to issue bonds for these major construction projects.
So how do we screw this up? Likely options that have derailed things in the past:

Will there be a study to see if the funding is possible?

I'd gladly pay a toll for a new bridge.

Need about 15 years and 350 million dollars for studies and committees and catered Lunches

It would definitely generate revenue. 40,000 cars per day even if they screw up the alignment.

How much legal weed is this state smoking? That seems absurd.

It was just so damn hard to predict that a temporary sales tax would never go away.

Read the article. Hell, read the part you quoted.
It's a sales tax not exclusive to marijuana.

Id pay a $20 toll for a bridge and rich person express lane through BR

See I read it as that sales tax being specific to medical weed.

They don't currently tax weed since weed isn't legal. They are talking about extending an existing sales tax AND applying a new consumption tax on weed.

I hope it’s at least 6 lanes with enough shoulder space to paint in another lane if they need it later.
Don’t mind a toll but they need to prioritize this. The Lake Charles bridge too.

LA ranked around 19th for our tax burden but at or around 50th in infrastructure, education, etc. link
I'll never advocate for more taxes until I can trust them to spend the money efficiently.

The five states with the highest average combined state and local sales tax rates are Tennessee (9.55 percent), Louisiana (9.52 percent), Arkansas (9.51 percent), Washington (9.23 percent), and Alabama (9.22 percent).

Our sales taxes are pretty high, but I honestly prefer them to property taxes. I'd be okay with a gasoline/diesel tax dedicated to roads. But maybe that's a cherry the local governments can try to pick.
We need to lower the income taxes in Louisiana.

So now we are taxing prescriptions?
If this is a "consumption or use tax" then it should be 100% recreational

It's that amount every year. The bridge will cost about $1 billion.
State isn't going to pay for all of it. It will have to be supplemented by a bond that's paid for by future toll revenue or federal dollars.

Still ain't enough. Too many hands out and wasting of tax dollars. By the time that thing is built it will cost 5 billion.
We should wait for the Biden magic people movers to cross the river that the federal government will be giving away. Biden is our man...if he can't do it...no one can!
