My son was born in August. We definitely did kindergarten twice. He’ll turn 19 right before he graduates high school. With him going into 5th grade this year instead of middle school I was very grateful. It gives us one more year to have him with us.

Same here. Didn't turn 17 until my high school Sr. Year was half over. Didn't hurt me any in life.

It's a fine line.

Our son has a May birthday, but was legit genius. It was a toss up between his being one of the youngest in his grade and hoping his maturity would keep pace (he was pretty mature for his age), or hold him back and run the risk of his being bored shitless in school.

We opted for him to go in on time and he did just fine.

Did your parents start you a year late? No? How did you turn out? Don't punish your son for your own insecurities.

This is especially true when kids are within a few months of the cut off date. Unfortunately for many families it become a financial decision as they are dependent upon the free day care.

Boys are a challenge and it takes work, but they don't need to start school late. They need discipline and high academic expectations. They will be immature and make mistakes; but if you teach them early that mistakes have consequences beyond just a bad grade, and school comes first, they can compete with the more mature girls. Also, an all boys HS helps.

I approve. My birthday is in august. Kind of wish my parents held me back.
