Out of curiosity, what was your impression with JPG? We've been there since Fall 2020, and overall are happy with the academic growth and formation of our children at that school, but my wife and I are having these talks every 2-3 months about the financial status of the school. Constant fundraisers and no advancement pertaining to structural upgrades/additions.

Would like to hear an outsiders' view of the school.

Nobody wants to take a left turn on Johnston Street.

I have no opinion of that school other than that they are responsible for me using every curse word in the English language due to them causing major traffic issues in the morning

We loved the environment and how faith based the school seemed. Also the size was a plus (but also potentially a drawback). There were 2 downsides and one other small drawback. First it’s a roughly a 17 minute drive one way (without traffic) in the opposite direction from either of our jobs. Secondly, and this was more of a bother to me than my wife, I didn’t feel like the campus buildings really reflected the tuition amount/fees. Like you said, there are many temporary buildings and many areas that could be updated. And lastly, this may be dumb to some people, but no one from our social circle sends their kids there. So, we didn’t really have an inside perspective from anyone that we know, and on top of that I think it will be better for our child’s social network if she goes to one of our other two options. We know folks at both Pius and Cathedral and they are larger schools.

With that said, if it was in a more convenient location we would’ve definitely considered it, but Pius is in our neighborhood and Cathedral is right by my wife’s work. It didn’t make sense for us to pass up those two options for a school that would’ve been so far out of our way.

Lafayette High. Looking for private schools or charters that have a decent high school advanced curriculum.

If your kid is in gifted, there’s no better place than LHS especially considering that gorgeous campus they’re about to open. Your child will be bored at a Catholic school.

If your kid is REALLY gifted. Look at ESA in Cade. Curriculum is the best in the area, possibly the state.

Our kids are currently in 7th, 2nd, kindergarten, and prek3. They let kids be kids, but start becoming more strict with dress code regulations and rules by the 6th grade (which I support). That was one of the main things that attracted us to JPG, especially for 5th grade and under.

We're in the same boat with distance...it's roughly a 19 min drive for us (we're about 5 min from Hwy 90 in Broussard). It's not terrible...growing up in Nola, I was accustomed to driving 25-35 minutes for high school. I understand the social circle, because we did not know any families when our oldest started in 2020, but EVERY family there is so welcoming and very friendly. Our oldest 3 play sports at Youngsville Sports Compex throughout the year, so we've become acquainted to some families that continued to play every year, and it gives our children an athletic outlet that is somewhat missing at JPG.

There's probably 5-8 JPG families at Pius 10:30 mass every Sunday, just FYI. A lot of JPG families intertwine with Pius families through the parish (KCs, ACTS, prayer groups, etc).

But back to Pius, if I'm cumulatively spending roughly $450k+ for private education, I feel like academic preparation for college should be top priority, with formation of the student a close second. It seems like Pius prepares their students to excel in high school and beyond, and all the resources are available to achieve that goal.

I second this comment. If your child is in the gifted program starting at Woodvale, you won’t be able to buy a better education in this area. Stay the course. My oldest had kids go from there to Cornell, Notre Dame, and a dozen other highly competitive colleges.

I've heard nothing but positive things about jpg. We toured the school, my son loved it was waitlisted. That was 2 yrs ago. Something about the boy to girl ratio was way off and the likelihood of him getting in was very low. He's moved on but we are considering sending our daughters there.
We've been associated with 3 Catholic schools and fundraisers are a non-stop occurrence. Its not just jpg.

I have 2 that we put through Pius and on to St. Thomas More. We chose Pius bc we are in Youngsville. It hasn’t been easy but it’s been pretty valuable. Both struggled to keep up because of adhd and at one point I was seemingly given an ultimatum to have my youngest evaluated and medicated? This was under the old administration I will say. I was pretty livid at the urging from the principal, but they want kids who perform and mine wasn’t focused enough to do as perfectly as her peers. She had no behavior issues at all. It was all about test scores and grades. I went along for a bit, but ultimately she didn’t tolerate the medication. This was probably a great blessing and her teachers supported our decision and settled on a happier B/C student. Peer groups can be brutal there, but that improved in high school. She’s still a B/C student at STM, but we are fine with it. One issue that is a major issue and I have no idea what middle school parents are doing is the grading scale. Diocese of Lafayette REFUSES to change to a 10 pt scale when the rest of the state has changed. Going into college that will be a challenge for GPA based scholarships etc. I have a feeling they’ll be forced to do it, but it’s unfortunate for this years seniors.

I have a boy and girl, boy is now at stm while girl has one more year at Pius. If I had to do it over again my son would have gone to Fatima/Catheral and daughter Pius. Boys are absolutely treated differently than girls at Pius. Both make great grades, son consistently had Cs & Ds in conduct.
