Why did the Baton Rouge cronies never push for the St. George area to join the city? What value is there in a separate tax situation?
Because about $50 million dollars moves from the unincorporated area into the City's budget while the City doesn't have to provide services to that area. It's direct subsidization.

I don't want to pay more money for your precious little snowflake to not have to go to school with kids who, god forbid, don't look like they do. If that's what you want, either move, or pay out of YOUR pocket.
As a self-proclaimed liberal, do you not see the hypocrisy in this argument?

Yes, or they could lower your tsxes.
The thing is it would be our decision.

No New Taxes Needed. Today we released a report from Carr, Riggs, and Ingram LLC, one of the top municipal accounting firms in the South, to evaluate the revenue, expenditures, and budget for the proposed City of St. George and produce a report that detailed the financial viability of the proposed city and the fiscal impact on the General Fund.
The report clearly states that the City of St. George would operate with a surplus and would not have to raise taxes. The report also indicates that the impact to the General Fund would be manageable and not catastrophic, despite comments made by the Mayor’s office.

Certainly, any tax increases were passed by the voters. No question about that.

I don't have an issue with raising taxes if you know you will see the results. If the end game is to create an ISD and the raise in taxes mostly goes toward improving the schools, then I'm for it. Education (and having jobs for these educated people) is the single most important thing to me and is well worth the investment.
It's not just about physically improving schools and technology though. What sticks out to me is the fact that there's a very high number of concerned citizens that want better for their kids and more accountability from the people in charge. You can build shiny schools all day, but it won't affect anything if the teachers, students, and parents don't care. That is apparent in EBR. In contrast, Central climbed up the school rankings with outdated technology and buildings that were falling apart in the beginning years of the ISD.
If enough people care and hold administration accountable, the city and ISD will find a way to be successful. And a tax raise to help achieve those goals won't scare them off.

Regardless of your opinions on this issue...does anyone really believe that this "expert" report isn't total bullshite?

As far as the future goes, IMHO an incorporated St George is about the only way that EBR Parish and the city of BR survive. Outflow to Livingston and Ascension is huge.
I don't think a lot of the BR folks give this the respect it deserves. When people move to neighboring parishes, they take their property taxes with them. This money goes to fund development in THEIR parish, infrastructure in THEIR parish. They drive in every single day to work in BR and then bring their restaurant money, bring their grocery store money, and fill up their cars with gas all in Ascension or Livingston.
The only way to stop this is to cede the southern part of the parish to their own incorporation with their own school district.
Or. They. Are. fricking. Leaving.
It's as simple as that.
