Agreed, that doesn't make any sense. Perhaps the initial numbers released were grossly inflated? I honestly don't remember if they came from the registrars office, Baton Rouge, or the petitioners. There's a lot of misinformation coming from all sides right now.
The registrars number is the one that ultimately matters though and if 16,500 is correct then i guess we will be seeing it on a ballot in March barring legal action or a large amount of fraud in the signatures.

Great. So my house is possibly "worth more" if I decide to sell it at some point in the future . In the meantime, EVERY SINGLE YEAR until then, I get new taxes to pay for all the new infrastructure, new projects and crap that St. George will undoubtedly discover we need.
Sounds legit.
Kind of what I'm thinking. Right now my vote is no. I don't have kids and don't plan on having any.

Haha...probably, people always vote with their wallets.

Wait the magic number is 16,500?

quote:The tax revenue never belonged to the city of Baton Rouge. It belonged to East Baton Rouge Parish. It is hard to separate the two since they both share the same Mayor President and Metro Council. The recent annexations are just evidence that the members of the Metro Council place the interests of their constituents who are residents of the city of Baton Rouge ahead of their constituents who are residents of the unincorporated areas of East Baton Parish, Baker, Central and Zachary. They have increased the tax revenue per resident of Baton Rouge while cutting the tax revenue per non-resident for those living outside Baton Rouge.
You really expect Kip (or any mayor, really) to just sit back and say "Ohh, suuure. Just take all that tax money from our city."
How is the Metro Council going to provide the same levels of services to those living outside of Baton Rouge that they have become accustomed to for the current taxes they pay? It simply will not be possible.

Exactly. If they think it through, there is no way in hell the majority of the catholic school families pull their kids and place them in the "new" public school. And those are the people that St George needs to vote with them.
Bingo. Even if St. George passes, it is still the same old Woodlawn High with the same demographics they are looking to change. I would imagine some of the magnet school families would try to move into Baton Rouge as well if possible.
Maybe I am wrong, just don't see any way this will make them even remotely close to Zachary or Central, especially with their leadership.

And yet, SG wanted them to belong to SG and not the parish.
Kip just beating them to the punch and they pissed now.

Obviously, it's going to be a long process to get new schools built and turn things around. You don't erase multiple generations worth of incompetence with a single vote. The passing vote signifies the majority is finally in place to put this town back on track...on track to being the great place it has the potential to be. It really is amazing this has gone on for so long. The city has to be excited behind closed doors...they'll finally have a decent school system that they can tout when entertaining new businesses that are interested in relocating here. Imagine how that conversation goes now..."ummmm, yeah, just keep on flipping thru the brochure, no need to read ALL the fine print...put that thing down and let's go sample some of south LA's finest cuisine."

It won't be hard to out-do the sterling leadership of the ebrp school board.

While I appreciate your optimism, experience tells me those of you who think that splitting Baton Rouge into a prosperous area called "St. George" and a blighted area called "Baton Rouge" will be shocked at all the unintended negative consequences for both.
IMHO, The private school parents will keep their kids in private schools. The EBR magnet school parents will move to other parishes or send their kids to private schools. The St. George schools will have the same basic demographic they have now. St. George will fail to establish magnet schools on par with current EBR magnet schools. The EBR schools will get even worse. On top of that it will add another layer of taxation and generally end up costing a lot of families a lot more of their income.
So many negative unintended consequences can spring forth from good intentions without airtight planning. And there is nothing airtight about St. George.

quote:At least St. George would have relieved the Parish of providing some services. The impact to those living outside of Baton Rouge would have been less severe. Going forward there will not be the same amount of money for fire protection, and there will not be the same amount of money for road repairs. Do you think people and businesses will stay in places where the infrastructure begins to decline, or do you think they will relocate to places that provide better government services? This will just add to the problems of lousy public schools.
And yet, SG wanted them to belong to SG and not the parish.

I'm sorry BLM, I don't share this optimism. Until SE BR acknowledges they have been a significant part of the problem, then I don't see them coming up with solutions to fix it. You don't have the same natural advantages that Zachary and Central had. Your fight will be much, much tougher, with maybe about 20% of you willing to fight it

The money for fire protection - St. George Fire Department and the Eastside Fire Department has its own funding that will not change with or without a new city and the money for roads such as the Green Light Plan has dedicated funding as well and that also would not change with or without a new city.

So you are perfectly willing to leach off of Zachary, BR, Baker, and Central if you get your new town?

the money for roads such as the Green Light Plan has dedicated funding as well and that also would not change with or without a new city.
However road repairs of city, not parish, roads would be the responsibility of the city of St George just like the Zachary & Baker Departments of Public Works are responsible for the repairs of city streets within their city limits.
The SG proposed budget has allocated a whopping $500,000 for road repairs and right of way maintenance annually. That's about a mile of street overlay.
And remember the proposed city of SG is larger in area than the area of the city of Baton Rouge. At least it was before all of the annexations happened. It's probably about the same now.
