The argument over the years has been that the council, who again represents the whole parish has an obligation to protect BR.

Does that mean they do not have an obligation to protect the whole parish which they also represent?

Ok.

This has always been an argument that It is more cost effective for the City of BR and Parish to operate as one.

Why do we not have one parish police dept and one parish fire dept which would seem to be inline with having one parish government?

We have EMS that covers the whole Parish?

Before there was a C-P Council like there is now, we had three cities in the parish; BR, Baker and Zachary. Since the C-P Council was constituted we added Central as a fourth city.

Prior to the C-P Council; I remember a BR city council which represented the city which was Ward 1.

Wards 1,2, and 3 formed the entire parish and there was a separate parish council. I'm not positive but I believe the BR city council members also served on the parish council.

I don't believe funds were co-mingled. There were city obligations and parish obligations too.

BR had their own police and fire departments. The sheriff patrolled unincorporated areas. The unincorporated areas and Baker and Zachary organized their own fire services. They taxed themselves for that.

Now we see that folks aren't happy. Schools are part of the problem, and now we see another fight to control parish spending and a fight for control of the city proper and for control of the parish.

City folks probably do not realize SGFD actually have their own fire trucks. They probably think the fire fighters use their personal pick ups.

This is a GREAT example of people stating facts that have ABSOLUTELY no idea what they are talking about......here let me help you out with THE ACTUAL FACTS.....

1. There is no EBRFD....I'm taking it you're trying to use your love for the STG movement to bash BRFD.
2. You truly should Google Automatic Aid & Mutal Aid agreements between Fire departments.
3. Not only does BRFD make runs into St George so does Central FD and East Side FD. St George does also make runs in these departments areas as per the fore mentioned agreements.
4. Yes parts of the Parish were annexed in BUT the tax revenue hasn't changed one cent. ST George has bonds and tax millages that are in affect and cannot be changed until they expire. Which has not happened yet.
5. BRFD does make more than double the runs into STGFD area than the opposite. This is a true statement as mentioned by another poster. If you need proof dial 389-2050. That is dispatch and communications for all departments in the Parish. They would be happy to give you those numbers. Or you can use Jr high cuss words in response.
6. BRFD is one of under 20 departments in the COUNTRY that has a class 1 rating. So you and others trying to bash that department is completely laughable and again shows your ignorance in this area.

Have a nice day hope you get your City and by no means are these facts in any way to bash STGFD. Again this is just the facts of this subject.

I didn’t see in the article where it said STGFD had to put out a BRFD Fire. Is the thread title just a dick measuring contest? Because I wouldn’t be bragging about a fire you could put out with an extinguisher.

I’m assuming the first up area of the mall is split between two departments?

I wasn't trying to bash BRFD.
They do a great job.

Just pointing out the politics of the situation.

It is spilt as of land/property but the tax revenue is still STG not BRFD as the oT is trying to sell. And it's still their responsibility.

Initially it was reported that SGF District would not collect the property taxes on annexed properties, but in the last round of annexations it was stated that they would.

I'm guessing that same methodology would apply to all property taxes, but I do not know. For instance do the recently annexed areas pay the CATS tax now? I'm guessing they do not.

If that is indeed the case then I think the only thing that has changed is the 2 cent sales tax going to the city now and not the police jury.

When millages expire, I'm guessing the property tax situation would change if the voters elect to renew them.

The question about fire has been answered, but what about police, street lighting, etc. Do the annexed areas get protection now from BRPD and street lighting and use of City Court, etc.?

Does anyone really know?

Funny just talked to a former council person.
If the city of BR split from the parish funding these bloated budgets of the BRFD and BRPD would be slashed. They have to dip in parish funds to pay for these depts as their retirement cost are eating their budgets up.

Why do you think councilwoman Donna Collins Lewis and Councilwoman Tara Wicker are against the city and parish splitting?

They do not want the people in The City of BR taxes to go up or city services slashed.

The Fire districts would be ok as their funding through property taxes.

You clearly don’t know how the department is funded. The properties that were annexed into the city are still part of the St. George Fire Protection District. Until the term expires in either 19 or 20 those business will still see St. George responding to emergencies. St. George FD hasn’t lost anything from these businesses that were annexed into BR.

I have been digging into these so called legacy costs to see exactly which employees they are talking about.

I think you hit on something I've been looking for, evidence that the vast majority of these legacy costs are for city employees.

I have no problem in putting up my fair share for parish employees who provided me services, but BRPD and BRFD do not.

I'd also like to know exactly which services would I lose from the parish if SG becomes a city. I don't believe it would be very much.

True, but what happens when those taxes expire in 19 or 20 if they are renewed? Will the tax district change for the renewal vote? Or will it remain the same.

Ask a councilperson.

They know the budget.

The problem is you have the parish and city government money combined.
If the city goes over the budget they can take money from the parishes budget.

This same former councilperson told me that DPW cannot service the whole parish properly. This is why ditches along parish roads are not maintained, bridges in the Northern part of the parish are in horrible shape some been closed for awhile. If this happened inside the city too many people would complain.

He told me the unincorporated areas are better off running separate from the city as they require less services than what they pay for.

No need to have a meltdown baw... Everyone is just pointing out and playing with the irony of SGFD responding to a fire on property which was originally St. George, but recently annexed for Baton Rouge in an effort to harm the St. George movement. The parish govt. is ridiculous, Nobody is saying BRFD sucks. Get your panties out of a twist.
