St. George and Central should get together and build a trail along the Amite

Check out the new SG city boundaries. It features a narrow strip of land that stretches along the Amite river all the way to Central.
We should build an Amite River Trail that connects neighborhoods and parks along the way. The master plan would be to go all the way from Ascension Parish to old Greenwell Springs hospital, which is owned by the state but is part of the BREC system.
The first leg would be ~10 miles of trail between Shenandoah and Bellingrath.
We could use city funds from both cities and offer tax break options to land-owners, while also seeking funding sources from BREC to create and connect parks as well as the state and feds to engineer some flood mitigation into it.

I think they should do a study first

That’s an awesome idea. Something like the Tammany Trace between Slidell and Covington.

Traffic is already backed up on it

I would love getting onto the trailblazing crew for a project like that.

Good point about Tammany Trace. I've heard good things about it.
I'm seriously considering starting an official movement for this and giving TD.com all the credit. What would it be named, though?
Amite Trace? Stormy Daniels Trail?

How about a canal from the Amite River to the Mighty Mississippi?
Get some commerce going there and if the Mississippi is low, the canal can send stormwater out to the Big Muddy!
I’m a goddam jeenus!

This is a really cool idea. I'll send a link of this thread to the Central mayor later today and see what he thinks.

BREC already has a master plan for a parish wide network of trails, some of which have already been built (behind Pennington, at the Mall of LA, River Road, etc). While it may not follow the exact line OP was referencing, it does connect the southern and northern parts of the parish.
BREC CAPP
Other cool aspects of this plan include the health loop trail, which traverses throughout the Essen to Siegen areas as well as the Blueway, which create a trail with boat launches on the existing bayous and creeks in SBR (one of which was most recently opened at Highland Road park about 2 years ago).

This isn’t Baton Rouge anymore. This is St. George, we don’t waste money on studies

I know your post was sarcasm

Question, is BREC a parish resource or a city resource?

First time I've ever seen this proposed EBRP loop.

Huh. Very interesting. All the completed trail projects have been within city proper of BR then.
