Spinoff Thread Based Upon "Life Expectancy" Question
Posted on 10/27/15 at 6:41 pm

So I had part 1 of my annual physical today (PHA) and was told that I drink too much and my BP is borderline (about 129/82). I'd looked up life expectancy by country for a different p-board thread about retirement age already and saw a "calculator" pop up, but didn't click it. Anyway, got back to work and found the site, entered the required data, and was not pleased with the result. My life expectancy is in the early 70s unless I decide to get married, which has a pretty significant positive impact (up to 77). It doesn't account for family medical history, etc. My dad's family lives from their mid-80s - late 90s, mom's tops out in their early 90s for the women, but late 70s for the men, with lots of cancer.
Here's the Link.
Takeaways:
1. Get married to someone relatively healthy.
2. Don't be fat. Being in decent shape and regularly exercising and not smoking were the only thing that kept me out of the mid-60s
3. Don't smoke
4. Maybe heavy drinking past college is overrated after all.
Tinker with the numbers. Not terribly scientific, but may be worthwhile for some.

ETAA: Hammertime's is fricking pessimistic. I had to lie to keep that one reasonable.

Smoking in moderation won't kill you. It's the addicts/pack a day plus smokers that are at great risk for cancer. I know people who "smoke" a pack every 2 weeks (social smokers) that are living in their 70's and 80's.

It projected your life expectancy higher if you got married? Married men statistically die earlier than married women. You know why? They choose to.

I believe that. But married men live significantly longer than single men.

I'm also 10 years older than her so she'll still be a young 72 when I cash my chips in...

Using the same "logic," you could conclude that smoking will actually help you live into your 80's!

I know people who didn't smoke that died when they were 40!!!!

Exactly. What is an average of 1 cigarette per day gonna do to me compared to a 1-2 pack per day smoker. Sure, the "non-smoker" is healthier, I guess, but it's not like you're smoking over 20 per day. I seriously doubt the guy whose pack lasts a month is going to die of lung cancer.

Who the hell smokes one cigarette per day? And for what? I probably smoked half a cigar every other week for a few years and one-two cigarettes over the weekend to be social overseas, but I never considered myself a "smoker." I have a few quality cigars left over and a sterling silver set that I was gifted, but I haven't smoked one since late 2013 and don't anticipate going back.
I never inhaled, btw--had asthma as a boy.

My great grandma smoked from when she was 10 until 102 and could barely put the cigarette in her mouth
That one said 72, and this one said 59 (which is what I expected
