Partying takes money. If your parents don't bankroll you with enough money to party (mine didn't) and your major is especially time demanding (like mine was), college isn't 4 years of partying. It's mostly just homework, tests, and classes.

You didn't do it right then. I paid for my own school and still managed to party, study and enjoy all 7 years of college

I was in the same boat coming out of college. Went off and spent some time in the Air Force and after a while I realized learning is not so bad and now I sit here with three degrees one of which is a masters.

Just because he doesn't want to now, doesn't necessarily mean never.

Sounds like he's more of a dumb arse than an entrepreneur.

Can he really make an ok living without a degree?

You know what employees in plants make? I know the operator threads are retarded.
But simple answer is: hell yes he can support a family and retire well if he gets a decent union job in a plant. Not too hard to do. Once in there, the sky's the limit. Move into maintenance, planning, scheduling. Can make six figures if he wants to do more than just be an operator. And many places offer tuition assistance if he chose to get degree at later time while still working.

My sons didn't either. And that's fine. One joined the military right out of high school and is doing great. Other started a detailing business right out of high school and is making a killing.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both dropped out of college. Richard Branson never attended at all.

People really need to stop using Bill Gates as a poster boy for not attempting or obtaining a college degree.

Harvard's curriculum was essentially easy for Gates, and people were just beginning at that time to even understand the capabilities of computers and the importance/future of software. The guy scored a 1590 out of 1600 on his SAT and was devising algorithms and solving problems so complex that even his professors were incapable of solving them.

A guy whose brilliance was off the charts and cutting edge for his field is not comparable in any way to a kid who doesn't have the desire or wherewithal to go to college in 2014.

And those are examples of people with eyes on their goals. Kids with no defined goals should at least try it out for a year or so. He isn't missing out on anything.

If he doesn't want to go, maybe he'll snap out of it in a few years if he discovers that menial labor isn't for him.

I had WAYYYYYY too many classmates drop out of college. They thought it was what they were supposed to do, and ended up costing their parents thousands over it.

I don't think you should force someone who truly doesn't want to go, because chances are, you'll be the one hurting from it.

This is true, and ditto. I've always maintained this simple mantra -- the fact your parents have the means to send you to college does not mean in any way that you should go to college.

I had more than a few fraternity brothers and knew more than a few other people who had absolutely no business going to college despite the fact that their parents had money and/or the means to send them there. Thankfully, the "you have to go to college or else you'll be shite poor for your entire life" fallacy my generation was indoctrinated with back in the 1990s and 2000s has been obsolesced to a degree, and that's coming from someone who has an undergraduate and graduate degree.

Agree.

I knew a few people after HS graduation who were of the "I don't want to go to college" mindset but didn't really have a plan of action or a desired field to enter. They essentially tread water for a year and then realized they had to have a planned course of action (i.e. trade or field of expertise).

Yeah you can drop out of college if you are a genius like Gates. You don't really need it. Also I believe he came from a very wealthy family, so even if he went out and completely failed he would have been fine.

Exactly. Not only was he a genius, but he came from a wealthy family, and dad was a prominent lawyer and his mother was on the board of both United Way and a large bank.

Not exactly the blueprint for the average Joe to bounce out of college.
