I got ridiculed by my ex girlfriend and her friends for being a college dropout. I had a full scholarship that I completely ditched out on (stupid move I admit that). They would constantly tell my ex how she needed to leave me and I would end up in a dead end job all while they never said anything like that in front of me because I bought drinks and dinners everywhere we went.
I have since talked to all of them and they admitted to me what they used to say and how they were wrong about me. They have racked up student loan debt about as far as the eye can see and I make $15-$20,000 more per year than they do. Is this the norm? No. Am I absurdly lucky to have gotten to where I am today? Yes.
End point. I had the drive to commit and strive to move up and make more and be better. If your son has that drive, he will probably make out just fine. If he doesn't, having that structure and time to grow up in college would benefit him.
Hope this helps

Trade work can earn more than most degrees nowadays.

Easily, depending where you live. Union blue collar guys in Ak make more than the average college grad. The reason many people started going to college is so they didn't have to work with their hands, but if you're in the right place with the right skills, you can make great money in the trades.

I went to college and didn't finish, didn't know what I wanted to do. Jumped around for a couple of years and finally landed in sales making 85-100k.Also, I don't have thousands of dollars in student loan debt to still pay back like some of my friends.

Sure. But if he can go to school without loans it's a good option.

Wife still can't stand that I make more (probably won't be that way for long) than her with no college degree and she graduated with honors from Loyola.

Good problem to have. Wife was making more than me as I was moving my way up, now she works part time though.

I could drop out of LSU tomorrow and start making 60-70k doing blue collar work with the family, but I don't want that life.

Especially with overtime. I have friends who graduated from LSU with either low paying jobs or no job at all. I tell everyone one of them to get into industrial construction and you'll make more money, the problem is they don't want to work. The money is definitely out there

i would say he could become a plumber, but this is the OT so im sure multiple people have already suggested that career path

I make a good living doing something that does not require a degree (even though I got one in the field, it's just useless). Now I try to take a few hours every semester for various tradeskills at the community college nearby.

Bullllllshhhhiiitttt! I never finished college and made 6 figures last year. And the year before. And will again this year.
Degree or not, you'll make as much money as you want as long as you figure out a way to do it.

Only people in the south think you don't have to go to college, right?

I work with some piping designers that are making $60-80/hour.
No college. Put there is the stigma of being a piper...Doesn't look like they give a shite.

Well, there's less stigma placed on a middle class kid from Livingston Parish not going to college than there is one from Portland, OR. Plus, in south Louisiana at least, there's more opportunity for people without college degrees than there are most places.

I never finished a semester of college I am now a well paid inspector in the oil and chemical plants. I did however put 10 years into it so far and have attained every certification available to me but I don't get out of the bed for less than 50 dollars an hour with most jobs being double time instead of time and a half. I do work a lot but I have made 50k already this year. Not bad for no college.

Yes. A lot of trades have a dearth of young people. Have him learn a manufacturing trade heavy in robotics and he'll be good.

It's comments like this, that make me realize that a good bit of people have absolutely no idea what "blue collar" or skilled trade careers actually entail. There's so much ignorance on this topic, it's pitiful.
