Grab my bike, my bug out bag, and start pedaling to my camp. Got enough diesel, kerosene, denatured alcohol, freeze dried food, and guns/ammo to last 2 years. I might be a bit of what you call a "prepper"

I read this year's back when it was just an e-book/Pdf in circulation among the Internet prepper crowd.
It's actually pretty damn good in that it incorporates a lot of fact and teaching into a realistic storyline.

Pretty much all cars made in the last 30 years are toast. Christ, it killed all the cars in the movie "The Day After", and that came out in 1983. The Russkies led with an EMP blast, which no one had heard of at the time.

You should do the following for any potential disaster or power outage
1st...fill bathtubs and any water jugs you have...you don't know how long, and it the EMP is from a strike, the rain water could be bad...pressure will only last for a few minutes
2nd...take whatever cash you have on hand go to the dollar general, and buy all their hard food, even if you have food stores...go armed...they will sell you whatever for cash in a disaster...
3rd...set up your ham radios you've had stored in a Farriday cage, also rally the local peppers for neighborhood defense.
4th...lock and barricade downstairs doors to the home, grow a tactical beard and break out the cargos, boots, mil T-Shirt, Web belt, etc.
People will trust you if you look like you know what you're doing
5th...establish water recoup from wells...if there are no wells, organize strike teams to stores of waters and claim water towers
6th...pull out the '79 CJ from the Farriday cage and put the turret on it

There's a pretty sobering DoD study that tried to predict what would happen in the D.C. area after a societal collapse. I can't remember if the nature of the collapse was ever mentioned, but the upshot is that the supplies in the city would run out pretty quickly and all those people who have no idea how to feed themselves would become like a plague of locusts streaming out of the city, just decimating the nearby farms and food production centers.

Every swinging dick with a shotgun or rifle is going to do this. There won't be much for you to hunt, and if you do manage to bag something, some a-hole will probably shoot you and steal it.
