Own a John Deere commercial Ztrac that I cut 7 acres with every two weeks. Mower has the kawasaki engine with ~400 hours. Outside of being rough per the terrain, the mower has been great

I have a gravely 42 and I don't have a bad thing to say about it. I'm VERY hard on it and it's held up with 3 seasons I cut my business,my yard and the the neighborhood pond levee everyweek. It has the Kawasaki motor on it. Biggest "complaint" would be it sucks some fuel. But I went to 4h equipment.

Definitely the Hustler Raptor SD. It has commercial parts & warranty. Also has a Kawasaki engine, which is by far the best engine for ZTRs. You won't find anything better for the price. I have a lot of personal experience with these machines.

I had a Toro (residential line) and it did not hold up too well. Went to the Scag Freedom Z and it held up very well.

Stout, for a one acre yard what would you recommend.
The guys I have cutting it now are just rutting it up. Thinking about DIY, but not sure if I could handle a weed eater or edger for that long, either. (Elbow)

What do you want to spend?
Like I said, Hustler / Big Dog (both made by Excel) are consistently rated as the best ZTRs for the money. They are also lighter than other mowers with the same features and ratings if you are worried about ruts. The Gravely that is equal to the Fastrak SD is nearly 350 lbs more.
The lower tier units in most mower lines (like Scag and Gravely) will have bushings instead of bearings in the front wheel spindles. Hustlers all have sealed steel bearings.
I know on Scag you have to step all the way up to the FreedomZ Pro to get a mower with bearings and that mower is $7K+ where as the regular ole Raptor for Hustler is $3K and has bearings. Little things like that is why they are rated the best for the money.

I'd be OK with spending that, esp. if it's lighter.
Are there any backpack-type edgers?
Dumb question, I guess, just looking for an alternative to lugging/balancing a weed eater around.

I have a John Deere 717A (48" deck) that I have been running for 11 years without any problems. I put the mulching kit on it and have only changed belts, air filters, oil filters and oil.

Another vote for John Deere. Mine still looks new after 4 years.
Mine is residential. The commercial ones look significantly more stout.

Bought a Scag Tiger Cub 48" cut in 2002. Took it to the shop today for clutch. Just routine maintenance stuff in 13 yrs. I cut 1 acre. Good mower.

Yeah, I always laugh when people talk about "welded decks." My stamped, 7ga deck has stopped my mower from near full speed before, nearly threw me off and still showed no damage.
