Absolutely.

My boss asked me about it after the first week and I told him it was ironic because he was at the same bar I was at. I showed up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7:30.

Without reading this whole thing.. She is a fricking intern, she doesn't need to be worrying about the fricking dress code. She don't like it, quit.

They're to blame as well. Had lunch yesterday with a friend that has a group of SJW parents at their school causing a ruckus and getting their kids into the mix as well under the idea that they are "standing up for what they believe in" and not understanding that life isn't fair and you aren't always going to get your way.

I showed up late a few Friday mornings when I started my big boy job. Luckily my bosses were cool and understood what was going on and kindly sat me down for a man-to-man talk.

You're not in Kansas anymore, Toto

I think coddling parents have always been there, but I think this new phenomenon of coddling college administrators looking to avoid a protest is a new phenomenon

These are the kind of people that don't realize that once your kid grows up and gets a job their boss doesn't care. That's what's such bs about all this safe space shite. Unless you have a government job no one gives a flying Frick bout your feelings.

I like the anecdote Bill Walton told about an exchange he had with John Wooden.

BW: Coach, you know how you told us to be strong and stand up when we felt something was wrong?

JW: Yes, Bill, I have said that many times. Why?

BW: I am going to attend a protest regarding The Vietnam War. It is really important to me.

JW: Well, Bill if it is important to you and you are going to do that, I admire your courage and will applaud you for standing up. However, we are going to miss you on the team this season.

Several people commenting in the article and a couple here seem surprised they fired the whole lot first thing. I read that and immediately imagined some VP that never wanted an intern program in the first place and got talked into it by his people. AND then this happened so he was more than happy to immediately pull the plug. Probably with a huge grin on his face.

Yep, I am sure he gladly supplied them all with a box for their stuff. Then he went out and had a great lunch with a drink or two and just giggled.

We accompanied the proposal with a petition, signed by all of the interns (except for one who declined to sign it)

At least there is a tiny bit of hope left in the world!

I honestly would not have fired them for this but would have laughed my arse off at this and took the time to advice not to do that again.

I probably would have done the same if it had just been the petition. The problem is she asked the manager herself and the other interns all asked their managers and they all were told that it was not possible and THEN they did this petition crap. That is unacceptable.

Uh. Sounds like you work at a company with a miserable work culture and you're part of that problem. I'd be risking getting fired if I gave employees shite for going to doctors appointments. Having a good work culture is very important when productivity thrives on collaboration. Maybe you just flip burgers?

Hmm..yeah, I actually agree. At first, I did think the immediate firing was extreme. But you're right. If this was a situation where the managers had already addressed the situation, and they were STILL pushing it, then yeah, it shows a lack of respect for their supervisors and company policy. Plus, if they wrote it together then there is probably a good chance that they did it while they were supposed to be working on actual assigned duties.

And let's face it. The petition(as the case with all petitions) was just basically a way to "gang up". The whole, "you really ought to listen to us because there are A LOT of us that are unhappy".

And, that shite probably worked for them until the real world.

So if an intern doesn't show up for three consecutive Fridays because he had a dr appointment, you wouldn't at least request verification? Kid is in college, Thursday night is the "go out" night in college, kid doesn't come into work until after lunch on Friday.. Its an intern, its a privilege to have that job, if he wants to frick off then do it on someone else's time.

You'd didn't say anything about requesting verification. I never ask for verification, btw because I hire adults and I treat them like adults. If you treat people with more respect you get more out of them even though it may not be in the form of hours spent sitting at their desk browsing the web. If that's what you're going for then by all means, carry on.

We have a leave policy that gives you a pot of PTO and you don't need an excuse to take off a day here and there. Theres no difference between sick leave and annual leave. Taking a string of days off for vacations need to be coordinated with their supervisors and clients, but If they lie to me they lie to me. I just need team players that get the job done and rise the occasion when things break.

Yeah, for employees. Who presumably bring value to the company.

What the duck does an intern bring to the company? Especially one who takes a half day every Friday?

Why bring them in at all if they don't bring value? I suspect company was already on the fence about it.
