We decided to write a proposal stating why we should be allowed someone leeway under the dress code.

Our proposal requested that we also be allowed to wear running shoes and non leather flats, as well as sandals (not flip-flops though) and other non-dress shoes that would fit under a more business casual dress code.
What a sense of entitlement!
Thinking that interns should run the company.
They should go to work for Google....

Why bring them in at all if they don't bring value?
They do bring some value. That is why companies participate. Companies tend to give more value than they receive when the big picture is examined.
A kid with an internship in his field is getting value. It gives him experience, a resume' building block, and a chance to prove his worth. Many interns are hired by the companies they intern at after graduation.
This group of kids had an opportunity to gain valuable experience and wasted it over inconsequential minutiae. They knew going in what the policies were. Know your role, shut your hole. Take the bounty of valuable experience offered and wear your fricking sandals at home.

showed up late a few Friday mornings when I started my big boy job. Luckily my bosses were cool and understood what was going on and kindly sat me down for a man-to-man talk.
I am very lucky at my job. My boss right now and the last one I had were the best. I pretty much show up and leave when I want. As long as I deliver quality work they don't care. Its something I've worked years to get in the position but its great.
I do also have night calls with folks in China as well as some calls early with some of my reports in Europe so I guess it balances out in the end. But the autonomy and work life balance is great.
