They did not say they were saddened by "media reports". They said they were saddened that there were reports that he did it. They use their words carefully . By the way he was asked to provide a statement about the incident and he declined.

This is why there needs to be no SU Law School.

Well, if he didn't say it, Erwin may as well start blasting N-bombs since most everyone is saying he did.

saddened and disappointed by the media reports that Judge Michael Erwin ('79) made hurtful and racist remarks
Sounds like their wording is pretty carefully crafted (it is a law school, after all) to say they are saddened by the media reports without conveying the assumption that the reports are correct. Even if the reports are false, I would assume they'd be saddened and disappointed that there are false reports of this, so I don't think the "saddened and disappointed" language necessarily implies that they are claiming the reports are true.

We expect all judges to live by the code of conduct they were sworn to uphold, and we remain committed to instilling in our students the values of equality, justices and respect.
A perfectly appropriate general statement of principles that does not convey any assumption about the facts of the incident.

Did SULC get Judge Erwin's side of the story? Sure doesn't seem like it.

saying they are disappointed and saddened by media reports, yet have not spoken with him?
How do you know they haven't spoken to him? What even is Erwin's side of the story? Has he made any public statement about the incident?
quote:
Am I missing something here?
Aside from a basic understanding of the English language, no.
quote:
Is this totally, absolutely innapporiate?
No. It's completely appropriate. They are saying exactly nothing more and nothing less than that they are saddened and disappointed that there are reports of one of their alumni doing something abhorrent. Who wouldn't be saddened and disappointed about that, regardless of whether the reports are true? And, just for good measure, to make absolutely sure that no one misinterpreted their statement as an implicit confirmation of the reports, they added...
quote:
The committed will review all of the facts surrounding this incident and make the decision. As a law school we must demonstrate fairness and due process.
Sadly, even that didn't keep you (and others, I'm sure) from misinterpreting their statement.

Why doesn't Erwin just make a statement?

"Proofread"

How can they teach students to practice law?
They actually have a higher bar passage rate than LSU.
Edit: I just looked it up and it appears that Southern has been slipping the past few years and LSU has upped their game. I stand corrected.

Calling out the judge is paramount to a slap in the face.

Was the alleged victim a Southern Law grad? Or did southern just claim all black people as their community? I'm sure that makes the white students very comfortable.
Maybe, since they are located in Baton Rouge, they consider all people in Baton Rouge to be part of their community?

You really think he said it ?????

Speaking of his side of the story, is it a little odd that he has made no comment on the incident? I realize he isn't required to, but it's strange that he hasn't.
Even as a private citizen, but even more so if I were an elected public official, if someone were falsely disparaging my reputation like this in the media, I could not get to a reporter fast enough to emphatically and categorically deny the allegations and try to prevent further damage to my reputation.
In Erwin's case, the fact that he is an elected public official is not as significant, since he will not be eligible to run for re-election anyway due to his age because Louisiana has a mandatory retirement age of 70 for judges, but his personal reputation is being tarnished here in any event. I'm surprised he isn't defending himself publicly, if the allegations are false.

They need to prove the judge actually said what a person claimed he has said before they do anything. Being a law school they should respect that

Why would SULC make a statement if they don't have all the facts? Seems rather irresponsible.

Not only has he not commented. But he has specifically declined to comment when asked . WBRZ reported that they asked him if he had a statement and he said no
