Can not separate the two. The Confederacy was The South. The South was the Confederacy like it or not. I for one will be forever Unreconstructed.

Stop arguing about slavery and succession.
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson might very well be the most naturally gifted and talented military commander since Alexander The Great.

thanks for responding...I do think that Lincoln provoked...bacuase it was in Charleston where he decided to make a stand...many of the other forts/installations had already laid down arms peacefully...Fort Sumter was specifically ordered not to do so...why?...because Lincoln knew that was where the most rebellious were located...he knew it would end up with them firing first...making it look as if the South was attacking first when that is really not what they wanted...contrary to popular belief and the way history has been taught...they did not want to fight...they just wanted to leave
I understand the view that our country would have been weakened by a "blackmail" type situation but that wasn't really my suggestion...a special congress...selected to meet in a neutral location and made up of new representatives could have come up with some kind of give and take....no it wasn't ideal to not let the official Congress granted authority by the Constitution to handle the problems at hand...but we see even in our own day how ineffective that body can be when hardened along the aisle
I don't agree that the C.S.A. would have ever fought against the U.S.A. in later wars though...I would actually think they would be very strong allies down the road due to basically and literally being family.

General Sherman fan myself. GOAT.
why?...all he did was carry out the orders given to him by Grant...Sherman was no tactician and strategist...he was just ruthless and didn't give two shits about burning Georgia in half nor the resident civilian population of the state...why is he the GOAT?...what did he do that made him such a great leader...being a shitty enough person to carry out the heinous acts that Grant directed him to do?
frick Sherman...hope he is burning in hell

If the people raise a great howl against my barbarity and cruelty, I will answer that war is war, and not popularity seeking.- William Tecumseh Sherman
