Hong Kong (CNN Business)Tesla (TSLA) began making cars in China about a year ago to bolster its presence in the world's largest auto market. Now the country is about to become an even more critical part of its global strategy. The electric automaker will soon start exporting Chinese-made vehicles to Europe, Chinese state-run news outlet Xinhua reported Monday. The company wants to start shipping Model 3 sedans from Shanghai as early as next week to Germany, Italy and Switzerland, among other destinations, according to Xinhua.

CEO Elon Musk has previously called the Shanghai Gigafactory, which first began churning out cars about a year ago, a "template for future growth."

The company has told shareholders that the facility was about 65% cheaper to build than its Model 3 production plant in the United States. And it is significantly less expensive to build a Model 3 in China than America, said Sofya Bakhta, a marketing strategy analyst at Daxue Consulting, a Chinese research firm.

Meanwhile, the Chinese auto market is predicted to become even more critical in the coming years. "Ultimately, we see China representing 40%+ of global sales for the company potentially by early 2022," Wedbush analysts wrote.

And Berlin.

It's unfortunate that Musk is going to learn the hard way when China invites their own electric cars in 5 years that magically look and run exactly like a Tesla.

Yeap! It helped launch a business that is now worth $397B and employs almost 50K Americans while also creating billions in wealth for stockholders

By comparison, Ford employs 87K

Internationally diverse production is standard in most segments these days

So forget about correcting the build quality issues? Definitely will not see initial quality improve from dead last.

If I had cash I'd be investing in whoever builds and replaces the infrastructure of the grid. The demand on it in the coming years will be incredible. We will eventually have all electric cars in time but can you imagine the load on the grid even 50 years from now?

I dont think he is too concerned with trademarks. His whole goal is to move the whole sectors to EV. He would give their ideas away for market growth.

Yes and no. Tesla's magic isn't in the build or design of the car. Where they crush everyone is the control systems, battery conditioning, supercharger network etc. They'll be programming cars remotely without letting china touch them. They're doing the same thing in the residential battery space and absolutely killing every competitor that tries to mimic them.

I don't see your subject line (soon, all Teslas will be made in China) mentioned anywhere in the article you linked.

Hint: It starts with "Nu" and ends with "clear".

That's generation, I think he's talking about transmission. There are several large energy infrastructure construction companies.

Disappointing. I really hoped that manufacturing would stay in the US.

The article states: "The company wants to start shipping Model 3 sedans from Shanghai as early as next week to Germany, Italy and Switzerland, among other destinations"

It is not feasible for Tesla manufacture every Tesla in the USA and then sell them worldwide. Even General Motors has 27 plants in China.

Well, that's just good business, but...

Define soon...Tesla has factories that haven't even been built yet in the US and overseas, so not sure how "soon" you think it'll be.

Teslas no longer come with any tax credit for buyers, so now you can complain about all the other US auto companies doing the exact same thing...or just complain about Tesla doing it and ignore the other companies.

Camilla Harris will sell out to China if that party is elected. Cost of business will be too much in the US.
