I’m generally an optimist but….
“ I'd sell your heart to the junkman
Baby, for a buck, for a buck
If you're looking for someone to pull you uut of that ditch
You're out of luck, you're out of luck
Ship is sinking
The ship is sinking
The ship is sinking
There's leak, there's a leak, in the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones that we kept in charge?
Killers, thieves, and lawyers
God's away, God's away
God's away on business
Business
God's away, God's away
God's away on business
Business…”

Once was a thought inside my head
'Fore I'd reach 30 I'd be dead
Now somehow on and on I go
I keep on rollin' with the flow
Folks said that I would change my mind
I'd straighten up and do just fine
Ahh, but I still love rock 'n' roll
And I keep on rollin' with the flow
While guys my age are raising kids
I'm raisin' hell just like I did
I've got a lot of crazy friends
And they forgive me of my sins
Some might be callin' me a bum
But I'm still out there havin' fun
And Jesus loves me, yes, I know
So, I keep on rollin' with the flow
'Fore I'd reach 30 I'd be dead
Now somehow on and on I go
I keep on rollin' with the flow

Over thinking, over analyzing, separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come
Lateralus.
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come
Lateralus.

Open the Gates
LINK
I heard you died out in Cheyenne
With my mother's ring on your hand
A note in your pocket said I love you till I die
I can hear the bulls are coming to claim what they've been huntin'
The son of a cowboy can't claim his daddy's right
And my baby, she's been cryin' at the thought of me dyin'
She knows there's no stopping a man and his foolish pride
So, open the gates, I'm here to prove
I'm better than my father was
And where he came from, too
Open the gates, I'm here to ride To-hell-I-go, with daddy by my side
And I ain't never feared nothing that was four legged and buckin'
Throw me on a hurricane and I'll ride it to the coast
You'll never know that your son came to do what you should've done
On a summer day a long time ago, top a bull named To-hell-I-go
So, open the gates, I'm here to prove
I'm better than my father was
And where he came from, too
Open the gates, I'm here to ride To-hell-I-go, with daddy by my side
Will I die out in Cheyenne with my baby there cryin'?
In a belly that's been growin' by the day
And I know that my son will do what his father should've done
A long, long time ago on a bull named To-hell-I-go
So, open the gates, he's here to prove
He's better than his father was
And where he came from too
Open the gates he's here to ride To-hell-I-go's calf
The daddy by his side
Keep the Wolves Away
LINK
Took my first breath, where the muddy Brazos, spills into the gulf of Mexico
Where the skyline's colored by chemical plants, t'put bread on the table of the working man
Where the working man does his best to provide, safety and shelter for kids and a wife
Givin' a little of his soul every day, making over time to keep the wolves away
Well I was barely thirteen when the company man, tried to dig my daddy's grave
It happened on a French owned tanker ship, spilling poison into Galveston Bay
Where the liquid fire filled his lungs and his eyes, silenced any mortal cries
Cold and the grip of death stinging pain, he fought like hell to keep the wolves away
For the next few years dad was sick as a dog, but he made a recovery just to spite the odds
Settlement came and we moved out of town, where the sky isn't heavy with refinery clouds
Yeah he's still alive he's doing good he's in his fifties
But the moneys running out, and he's pinching for pennies
So I'm goin' for broke with every song I play, 'cause now it's my turn to keep the wolves away

Drive west on Sunset
To the sea
Turn that jungle music down
Just until we're out of town
This is no one night stand
It's a real occasion
Close your eyes and you'll be there
It's everything they say
The end of a perfect day
Distant lights from across the bay
Babylon sisters shake it
Babylon sisters shake it
So fine, so young
Tell me I'm the only one
Here come those Santa Ana winds again
We'll jog with show folk on the sand
Drink Kirschwasser from a shell
San Francisco show and tell
Well I should know by now
That it's just a spasm
Like a Sunday in T.J.
That it's cheap but it's not free
That I'm not what I used to be
And that love's not a game for three
Babylon sisters shake it
Babylon sisters shake it
So fine, so young
Tell me I'm the only one
Here come those Santa Ana winds again
My friends say no don't go
For that cotton candy
Son you're playing with fire
The kid will live and learn
As he watches his bridges burn
From the point of no return
Babylon sisters shake it
Babylon sisters shake it
So fine, so young
Tell me I'm the only one
To the sea
Turn that jungle music down

The show BEEF this year reminded me how great this song is.
"Mayonaise"
Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
Doomed
Pick your pockets full of sorrow
And run away with me tomorrow
June
We'll try and ease the pain
But somehow we'll feel the same
Well, no one knows
Where our secrets go
I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary
Dream
I'm rumored to the straight and narrow
While the harlots of my perils
Scream
And I fail
But when I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will
Mother weep the years I'm missing
All our time can't be given
Back
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
That cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
So bad
When I can, I will
Words defy the plan
When I can, I will
Fool enough to almost be it
And cool enough to not quite see it
And old enough to always feel this
Always old, I'll always feel this
No more promise no more sorrow
No longer will I follow
Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
When I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits
Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime
Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware
Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Don't call my name out your window when I'm leavin'
I won't even turn my head
Don't send your kinfolks to give me no talkin'
I'll be gone like I said
You'd say the same old thing
That you be sayin' all along
Lay there in your bed, keep your mouth shut
'Till I'm gone
And don't give me that old familiar cry and fuss and moan
Understand your man, meditate on
Understand your man
And you can give my other suit to the Salvation Army
And everything else I leave behind
I ain't takin' nothin' that'll slow down my travelin'
While I'm untanglin' my mind
And I ain't gonna repeat
What I said any more
While I'm breathin' air that ain't been breathed before
I'll be as gone as the wild goose in winter
Then you'll understand your man, hear me talking out, honey
Understand your man
Understand your man, meditate on him
Understand your man

I won't even turn my head

One
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or a dream
Deep down inside, I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh, please, God, wake me
Back in the womb, it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh, please, God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh, God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh, please, God, help me
Darkness, imprisoning me
All that I see, absolute horror
I cannot live, I cannot die
Trapped in myself, body my holding cell
Landmine, has taken my sight
Taken my speech, taken my hearing
Taken my arms, taken my legs
Taken my soul, left me with life in Hell
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or a dream
Deep down inside, I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Cats In the Cradle- Harry Chapin-
My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, dad"
"You know I'm gonna be like you"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw, I said-a, not today
I got a lot to do, he said, that's okay
And he, he walked away, but his smile never dimmed
It said, I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then
Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?
He shook his head, and they said with a smile
What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then, dad
You know we'll have a good time then
I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind
He said, I'd love to, dad, if I can find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
It's been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when"
But we'll get together then, dad

NIN "Only"
I'm becoming less defined as days go by
Fading away
And well you might say
I'm losing focus
Kinda drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself
Sometimes I think I can see right through myself
Sometimes I think I can see right through myself
Sometimes I can see right through myself
Less concerned about fitting into the world
Your world that is
'Cause it doesn't really matter anymore
(No it doesn't really matter anymore)
No it doesn't really matter anymore
None of this really matters anymore
Yes I am alone but then again I always was
As far back as I can tell
I think maybe it's because
Because you were never really real to begin with
I just made you up to hurt myself
I just made you up to hurt myself, yeah
And I just made you up to hurt myself
I just made you up to hurt myself, yeah
And I just made you up to hurt myself
And it worked
Yes it did!
There is no you
There is only me
There is no you
There is only me
There is no fricking you
There is only me
There is no fricking you
There is only me
I'm becoming less defined as days go by
Fading away
And well you might say

Foreigners song Dirty White Boy resonated back in my oilfield days.
Today I would have to find a song complaining about knee, shoulder and back pain.

I assassin down the avenue
I'm hiding out in the big city blinking
What was I thinking when I let go of you?

What was I thinking when I let go of you?

They say it takes hardship, boy
To let you love the rest
Sometimes underneath the load
Is where I show my best
Go, put your work clothes on
Go and leave your mark
And they say
Don't let it get too dark
Don't let it get too dark
Don't let it get too dark
No, not this time
They say it takes hardship, boy
To let you love the rest
Sometimes underneath the load
Is where I show my best
Go, put your work clothes on
Go and leave your mark
And they say
Don't let it get too dark
Don't let it get too dark
Don't let it get too dark
No, not this time
