re: Something to consider before deciding to help a stranger who is being assaulted

I don’t carry weapons, so unfortunately I’m unlikely to engage a man who just stabbed someone in potentially mortal combat to save a stranger. I would have tried to help the lady.
In a fantasy life, someone pulls out a gat and shoots that motherfricker right after he stabs her and save the people of North Carolina a whole lot of money.

I started in 2020. Pistol in the suv. Always a knife on me. Maybe 2.
Ak-47 in the house with the blockbuster shotty.
I’m sure most people on here are armed to the gills.
Just waiting.

Because people like YOU are why things like that happen.
Answer my question.

You wouldn't know. Your widow might have remarried to a wealthy individual that loved the idea of step-kids whose dad died trying to protect a pretty Ukrainian.

I don’t remember the question.
You are making assumptions about me, and how I would react, based on me posting a seldom discussed (but still valid) topic for the board to consider

I just don’t think you know what time it is.

I'm not going to bring fists to a knife fight unless I have a very favorable opportunity. I'm not going to knife fight anybody under any circumstances if I can help it. In general though, any man worth his weight is going to do something other than watch a 100 pound young woman get stabbed and bleed out on the ground over the course of several minutes. In this particular case, asses, render aid, call 911, if you're armed shoot the bad guy if he comes back. That's about all anybody could have done here without the benefit of hindsight.
With the way this happened, nobody could have prevented it once the attack initiated.

Do you have a lawyer on retainer that you can call day or night?
If not, what is your plan if you are involved in an event at 11PM on a Thursday?

The bottom line is—yes absolutely you should intervene and do something. But, is it really that simple?
The act alone happened within about 2 seconds. And IF you actually happened to be paying close attention and saw exactly what happened which would probably be a slim chance, would your mind be able to process it in the next 5 seconds after that before she fell to the ground and there’s a guy walking around with a knife in his hand literally dripping blood everywhere.
Option A.) Do nothing, play it safe
Option B.) immediately assist the woman, turning your back to large man with bloody knife
Option C.) Ignore dying lady and go after knife wielding man
We can mostly agree that option B or C would be the best choices. However, chances are you would have been zoned out, playing on your phone, reading, passing time—when the attack happened you would have been so confused about what’s going on and any course of action would seem unjustified to you. Maybe the woman was injured by some unknown source and the man just jumped up real fast to get out of danger. You really wouldn’t know until you take a minute to figure out what the heck is going on.

Life isn’t like TV. Knife fights are brutal.
The quote I heard regarding knife fights is that “it isn’t if you’re going to get stabbed, it’s how bad and how many times”.
I’d want to make damn sure I got the drop on a large schizophrenic knife wielding maniac in a locked train car before I waded in. Unless you’re some knife specialist there’s almost no way you walk away from that unscathed.
With a handgun and ten feet of space he’s dead and isn’t laying a hand on me.

The thing about a knife fight is barring one party being vastly more trained than the other, everybody is going to get extremely fricked up.
The winner is going to outlive the loser by a few seconds but everybody is probably going to die.
Don't knife fight anybody, ever, under any circumstances. Shoot them A LOT or run away. If you can't outrange them, you might "win" but everybody is a loser in a knife fight.

Would you make this post if your wife and/or child was being shown bleeding out on that train while people stood by and watched?

Might want to re-think that assumption and read case studies on knife vs gun situations. I think within 30 feet the person wielding the knife has the advantage.
Within 10 feet? You are likely getting cut.

So you are ok with telling your kids you stood by and did nothing while an innocent person was attacked and killed...
I can assure you that is not the legacy I am going leave with my kids... and/or grandkids..

Sure, because if you actually read the entire OP you would note that I am not telling anyone not to help.
I declare, some of y’all get about halfway through a post and let your emotions take hold of you.

True. But next time we are in a situation we will be watching for anyone that seems off, and what are we going to do if a blissfully unaware girl puts herself in what we believe to be harms way?
Are we just going to sit there and hope something doesn’t happen or are we going to risk embarrassment and a fight to do the right thing?
That’s the question we should be addressing in advance, not this weak bullshite of pre-loading excuses for inaction.

You’re making assumptions about what I would or wouldn’t do. The OP doesn’t include any of that info.
