Why are schools closing for the eclipse?
Some schools, like New York state's Syracuse City School District cite general "safety risks" as a concern. However, staff is expected to report to work on a half-day schedule.

quote:

One Pennsylvania school district was slightly more detailed in their assessment of safety concerns. In a letter to parents, the Pine-Richland School District, just outside of Pittsburgh, explained that because the eclipse is expected to occur during dismissal, "the potential is significant for students to be tempted to view it without proper safety precautions while exiting the school building or while getting off of the school bus."

According to the Carnegie Science Center, the maximum eclipse will occur at 3:17 p.m. in Pittsburgh.

Erie, Pennsylvania schools are also closed, but their public relations coordinator, Erica Erwin, cited a slightly different reason. Because Erie is in the path of totality, the city expects to have a significant number of visitors. "To help mitigate what will likely be unprecedented travel and traffic challenges, that day will be a non-attendance day," Erwin shares. Teachers will have a professional development day.

The path of totality includes parts of Texas. The Ennis Independent School District, located south of Dallas, noted on their website that the city is predicting as many as 200,000 visitors. They also anticipate that "staff members will choose to take off and many parents will elect to not send their children to school on that day in order to share the experience and activities with their families."

As a result, schools will be closed.

They should just be closed because it's cool and kids should enjoy it

What if this is when the holographic aliens show up and everything changes after that day and the whole world joins together like Independence Day and there's no more war and then we make friends with the aliens and they show us how to levitate and communicate with higher beings and shite?

It's going to be shite show traffic wise in the path of totality. Arkansas is expecting over 2 million tourists at least. Traffic will be a cluster frick still when schools get out so it makes good sense to cancel classes.

I'm okay w/them wanting to get out early or flat out cancel classes for the day. Like someone mentioned below traffic is going to be absolutely FUBAR'D.

I was in western Nebraska in 2017 for that eclipse and it was pretty awesome. I will admit that I don't want to be anywhere near the path this time because I know how stupid people are and 100% expect people to stop in the middle of the interstates to get out of their cars to look.

When the path of totality was in part of Kentucky last time people got stuck on I-65 for hours trying to get back home. Flat out grid lock. One of the small towns that was in the path had full on gridlock for multiple days.

People going apeshit over an eclipse is no joke.

Mrs. TDsnumbo and I are bringing the kids camping in Texas for the eclipse. Knowing my luck it’ll be cloudy that day.

Early April in Western PA it is absolutely possible. I'd give it a 7/10 chance.

Yeah it's probably gonna be overcast in Gibsonia, where the Richland-Pine district is located in April 8th.
