That option was ruled out by the very question of the problem. You pick a gold ball first. Period. That’s the catalyst for the entire problem.

Once you pull the gold ball, you've eliminated the all silver (AS) box from your options. So in your hand you either have the all gold box (AG), or the mixed box (M). Leaving you only 2 options:

1) The chance of drawing a gold from the M is 0%

2) The chance of drawing the gold ball from the AG is 100%

The only way you change those odds are if you place your drawn gold ball back into your box. And then draw again from that same box. But I did not interpret the problem that way.

I read it that I now have 1 gold ball in my hand, and there is only 1 ball remaining for me to choose from, in THE SAME BOX. Its 50/50 at that point. I either have the AG box or the M box in my hand. There are simply no other options

This is how I originally interpreted it. However, you have to take into account what you know and don't know to determine the probability. You DO know you picked a gold. You DON'T know from which of the two boxes. There's a stronger likelihood that you chose the box with two golds in the beginning. That gets factored in.

I'm not reading 10 pages, but I'm going on record and saying the OT is fricking stupid and I'm guessing that the people who make the OT fricking stupid were shown why they're wrong on page 3, but have been arguing why they are right since then.

So, for each test, we pick a ball 1 million times. If we pick a silver ball, we go on to the next pick. If we pick a gold ball, we look at the other ball in the box we picked from. At the end we look at ONLY the times we picked a gold ball first, and we see the fraction of times that the other ball was also gold. It's fairly fast on a modern PC, so I ran it 10 times (remember it was a million picks for each run and another pick if we picked gold first).

Results are:

It's pretty safe to say that simulation agrees with the assertion that your chances are 2/3 to pick a second gold ball GIVEN that you've picked a gold ball first.

That's right it does establish a new one. But you have to understand that you were more likely to pick the GG box over the GS box by 16.67%. That didn't go away. So while it seems like a 50/50 shot, you still have to factor in the original likelihood of picking one over the other. Hence, the 67%.

The initial probability of drawing a certain ball is the same as the probability of drawing that certain ball at any future point.

So if you start with 3 gold balls and 3 silver balls . . . .
