Sold an iPhone on eBay ... Buyer Remorse or Scam?

I listed my old iPhone on eBay. I took plenty pictures, I know it works because I've been using it the last couple years, and I put in the item description that it had minor scratches on bottom. I also listed it with no returns.

Someone purchases it on Monday and I ship Tuesday. Today I get an email at 1045AM saying that buyer is requested a refund bc it wasn't accurately listed and that it is "unusable." He/she also said that he shipped it back per my request (which never happened).

I then notice on my USPS package tracking that this request was generated 45 minutes before the package was scanned as delivered.

So ... is this guy trying to scam me or do you think he might have found a better priced iPhone and is just trying to manipulate the system to get his money back?

What would the OT do? I don't want to refund him just because he changed his mind.

Thanks for your help!

Open a dispute and point out everything you said in here in the dispute.

Prepare to get fricked though. eBay has a long history of believing the buyers over the sellers .

I have documents with time stamps that show the dispute he started was initiated BEFORE the package was even delivered. Hopefully this is key

Plus it's likely that if it is some sort of scam, the buyer has had similar issues that eBay may know about. Can you see any of their old feedback?

Tell eBay to review the listing for your description of flaws and statement of no return,

Also tell eBay you never instructed buyer to ship item back, and they'll need to ask for proof from buyer that such a convo took place.

Make sure that the imei number is the same and that he did not switch it out with another phone if/when the phone returns to you. I have had buyers try to dispute an unlocked phone so I got smart and took photos of all the phone details on the menu as well as a date and time stamp before I send it.

You're screwed. Paypal and ebay are pro buyer 100%. Smart people don't sell on ebay unless it's a face-to-face final transaction.

Its stuff like this is why i dont sell high value stuff on ebay no more. eBay and paypal can give a rats arse about you the seller.

But if you do get your phone back, check the IMEI and S/N to make sure they didnt swap it out on you.

Oh, and beware on selling anything to the Miami area. They get those phone and ship them directly overseas.

So this morning I got a new message from him on eBay and basically he made admitted he made a mistake and closed the dispute. I withdrew that money from PayPal as quick as possible!

I guess he has ordered a phone from someone else and got the orders confused. I appreciate all y'alls help though.

Yea seems like bullshite. Your timeline info seems crucial, unless that person is in a different time zone or international and it shows their local time on their dispute initiation.

The post office system updates at odd times. I've regularly gotten things out of the mailbox that the tracking system hasn't recorded as delivered, yet.

That said, it still sounds suspicious. I'd ask for specifics on exactly how it is unusable. Is it just that the battery is dead or is he asking that the phone do something it can't: like be registered on a network that isn't compatible with that particular device; be used without an existing service contract; etc. Was it damaged in shipping?

Yea so he cancelled the whole dispute which unfroze the money. I don't think he can make a claim anymore. I think I lucked out of this one.
