Sounds like you have a few years to fester over SS withholdings while you age and work, then you do what all other workers except teachers and railroad workers do, you start drawing crumbs from your money pile.
Now consider the possibility you get hurt or disabled, you will really see how sorry the SS system is. Let’s say you leave a $185,000 a year job due to an injury, after 2 years of weekly doctor visits and procedures later, you finally have to face the fact you won’t be able to do the work you were doing nor anything close to that. You can’t draw unemployment because you must be able to perform work to qualify for unemployment, so you have ZERO income now for about 2 years.
You consult an attorney, he looks at your piles of doctor reports and charges and decides he will take your case, if you win, he gets $9200.00 plus administrative fees. He gives you a pile of papers to fill out and he fills out a few and your claim is filed. Weeks pass and one day you get a letter form SSDI telling you your case has been filed and they will be looking at it, and the tell you the first portion of the filing may take 320 days or more.
So that’s another year SSDI incompetence has delayed you from receiving any of the money YOU were forced to pay in. After months and months, you MIGHT hear from SSDI with some questions, if they don’t have obvious grounds to reject you, they drag you out for 230 to 300 more days, “looking into your medical history” which they had access to at that point for over 360 days.
They continue to drag arse around, playing the odds you’ll either be forced to do SOME kind of work to keep from starving and BOOM, they got you, you performed work, you aren’t eligible for disability, you performed work!!
Ha Ha, got you! Or if you can’t be caught trying to earn some money, they’ll wait you out another 250 days for off the wall, ignorant arse reasons, till you finally give up and take a minimum wage job or drop your claim or do something or fail to do something and they say it disqualified you.
They play the odds that most working class people can’t go for 2 to 3 years with ZERO income and not be forced to do something. And if that something can be tracked to you SS number, BOOM again, you’re disqualified.
Now couple this with the daily news of hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens just strolling into our country and being automatically enrolled and given SS benefits, welfare, WIC, housing, phones, you name it….it will piss you off right and you’ll have a deeper hate for the SS system.

Our system is so backward. Responsible people always get screwed.
I think means testing will be a last resort. I think raising taxes and eligibility ages will happen first.

I’d rather they allow the individual to control their own money. They can still call it a tax and require it go into a retirement account, but give the individual the choice to where it goes. I’d rather have my financial advisor manage it with my personal IRA, etc.

This is a mindset that needs to change. It is a defined program with all sorts of rules for qualifications. They do owe you based on how you contribute which is why they send you an annual statement of what they plan to pay you at full retirement based on your contributions. There is a defined formula that dictates your payments.

As of right now this not the case. It is not means tested your payments are based on what you pay into the system. For example I make way more money than my wife. When I compare her statement against mine my projected payout is significantly higher than hers.

No one seems to complain that it always has paid out at a higher proportion of contributions to lower earners due to bend points.
Because it's not completely true. Higher earners also get paid out at the higher percentages of their income up to the maximum of the lower bend points. It's essentially the inverse of how our income taxes are calculated.

I think we all want this option as well. Unfortunately, GW was crucified when he pitched this exact idea to congress in 2005.
