Shiny Happy Posts causing butthurt and depression. Yes, this is a thing.

quote:

“However…the unintended consequence is that if you compare yourself to your Facebook friends’ ‘highlight reels,’ you may have a distorted view of their lives and feel that you don’t measure up to them, which can result in depressive symptoms. If you’re feeling bad rather than good after using Facebook excessively, it might be time to reevaluate and possibly step away from the keyboard.” She adds that people prone to depression may want to be aware of the connections, and think about how and when they log on to social media.

Riiiiiight. Because FB is the ONLY social media outlet

It's the main piece of social media that baby boomers use. It's funny how you people complain about it. But you are literally one of the reason why so many young people don't use that former of social media anymore.

As far as your nonsense about entitlement goes. I think it's funny that so many of you act like the entitlement complex just appeared out of thin air. As if your generation doesn't have anything to do with it.

Also, (I know this may be news to you) message boards are a form of social media. So you are contributing to the "destruction of our poor society"

I think that some people (like the OP) fail to realize how integral social media is in the social lives of the younger generations. I keep up with my friends and learn about opportunities to hang out with people or attend cool events through social media. I have social and fitness groups that meet at different places each time, and the only way to find out where we're meeting is to find out on social media. When you have 50+ people showing up, it's impractical to call everyone who might be interested in going. So you have a Facebook page and Instagram account that people follow, and people know where to go.

I'm more socially connected because of social media. I spend more time with friends because of social media. I live in NYC and the rest of my family lives in the south. Most of my old friends are scattered around the country, and the world. I literally could not keep in touch with the people I care about without Facebook and Instagram. I'd lose track of people if all I had was a phone and an email account.

You've go to realize how young social media is. We are still trying to figure it all out.

Holy frick....are some of you really getting to the point of saying "the internet is a bad thing. That's why he did this shooting". I've heard it all now.

No one is saying that at all. However, acting like there isn't a dark, degenerate side of the internet is asinine at best.

If you take social media serious, it presents a very screwed up sense of society. However, it's mainly entertainment or some creative outlet for some people.

Anyone who judges themselves by crap they read on a message board or other social media site has some problems.

I'm not saying it cant be productive. I agree that it helps you keep in touch with many people in various places. But the majority of social media is not used for that purpose.

I remember the days of having to pick up the phone and call a girl
So society is being destroyed because you don't have to talk on the phone girls?

Not having to waste time on the phone talking to a girl sounds like one of the biggest wins ever to me.

quote:

The art of communication is dying now because people dont even talk anymore. All FB does is breed false validation and acceptance through how many "likes" they get. Not to mention, 1 bad pic or post that gets leaked and has the potential to alter the rest of your life negatively. I am scared of what the world will look like when my kids hit their teens in 10 more years.
I've never heard this take before!

I think the downside is some people actually thinking social media mirrors real life. It's an exaggeration of real life.

FIFY

Your confused. Social media's negatives are symptoms, not problems. People suck. Theyve always sucked. I actually think we have a chance of sucking less as a population due to the spotlight social media can shine on things.

If not for Tinder, I'd delete my FB account. I've only had FB for about 3 years. I remember when I first got on, it was fun. People post funny things or pics of their family or trips. Now it's mainly a bunch of crying: my heart is broken, political crap, etc.

And then there are the Instawhores. These females are gonna be in their 30s before they know it, and they'll be all alone telling their 5 cats how they used to get 200 likes for bikini picks.

I have been slacking off of Facebook a lot lately. Between the Political posts and offers to get in on this tremendous business opportunity from people I haven't seen in twenty years is getting old...
