There are eight SEAL teams. Each team has six platoons and a headquarters element. SEAL platoons consist of 16 SEALs -- two officers, one chief, and 13 enlisted men. A platoon is generally the largest operational element assigned to a mission.

Seal Team 6 is a special missions unit. SMU’s are the extra cool guys with the extra cool missions. SMU’s consist of a variety of the tip of the spear special operations guys (CAG/Delta)

There are a number of SEAL teams (8?). Back in the day, there were only a few teams. When Marchinco formed Team 6, they named it the 6th team to make our enemies believe that we had a lot more operators than we actually did.

There are 8 SEAL teams. Team 6 is actually called DEVGRU by the team members. It's a hodge podge of members from other teams. They are selected by the current team members. It's the best of the best

Yeah they go through a selection process and have to basically sit in front of a "board" of members. If they get selected they are placed in what is called "green team" which basically means a rookie. I believe you can be booted off of green team if you don't gel completely or frick up.

The actual number of SEAL Teams we have is classified. The number six was chosen by Richard Marchinko randomly so that our enemies wouldn't actually know how many SEAL teams we have.

It's basically the coolest frat in the military. Doesn't mean they're really all that good but they have the most money and the coolest toys.

When Team 6 was formed back in late 70s/early 80s(?), there were only two existing teams. Team 1 in Coronado (odd numbers) and Team 2 in Dam Neck/Little Creek (even numbers). The even number 6 was picked randomly to confuse the Soviets. It was formed as a hostage rescue/ anti-terrorism unit, similar to OD Delta.

Candidates are put through a months long screening process. Normally candidates are picked from other SEAL teams. If you are interested, Howard Wasdin, a former Team 6 member, wrote a book called SEAL Team Six which covers his training and the time he spent in Somalia.

Also, No Easy Day, the story of the assault on bin Laden also covers some of the selection process.

Team 6 is the anti terror team. The team EVERY SEAL wants to be on, that's why they are special. They don't have access to any weapons or other equipment that the other SEAL teamsa don't have or anything like that.

Also, ALL SEAL teams choose their own members, once you make it through BUDS you have to be chosen by a team, rarely if ever does Team 6 take someone right out of BUDS, because it is considered an honor above others to serve on that team , and you have to prove yourself on one of the other teams first.

Richard Marcinko (the guy who established ST6) has a book about its origins called Rogue Warrior. NYT best seller and a good read.

There isn't a special forces unit from any branch that is not hard core as frick. You are just splitting hairs past a certain point.

That's cute that you believe the publicly available number.

Yeah I know. I was trying to make a point. I'm not a huge fan of SOCOM, the SEALs in particular.
