That statistic is a bit skewed, but if he wants to play he will

Me too. I will let my future kids play golf, tennis, and choose between baseball or lacrosse.
Football is too dangerous and I'll be damned if I waste my money on my sons playing ballhoop

I'm not saying whether it's a guarantee or not bc not only am I not a doctor, but I didn't read the study either. Just curious though, did they only study brains from people with known head injuries when they played?
Also, I don't have kids, but when I do, I won't hold them back from doing things they would like to do, even if it's football. You can't live your life in fear of things. That's no way to live.

I'd be lying if I said new information hasn't given me pause.
I'll be interested in where we are when my sons get to the right age if the begin to show interest.

The problem currently is that they can only confirm CTE in autopsy.
But there are plenty of other ailments that have been tracked in long time football players. It's not likely any of our kids will get to that level, so I'd still consider the risks to your average kid that plays for a few years unclear at this time.

My son won't play football. Sticking to baseball.

Out of the hundreds of thousands of deceased football players they only found CTE in 150 out of 200 brains and there's nothing proving that football was the cause of the brain injury.

I played basketball all the way from elementary through high school. Ended up with 5 concussions. I ma fien today

those of you with sons....will you be letting him play or not?
Haven't decided yet. He's still super young though so I have time.

I don't totally understand this statement, but it would seem only the 200 brains tested would be relevant and not the hundreds of thousands untested. And 75% positive is pretty high.

True, but for such a relatively new ailment, the correlation is pretty high so far. Hopefully more research will yield more answers.

The 200 tested were either suicides or had extensive history of concussions while playing football. However, some were just old and could not be determined if CTE was due to age, demetia, or something other than football.
So why not test every brain that played football?

I've seen the most severe and long lasting concussions from soccer.
Mine just finished a 4th grade through high school football career two falls ago. He made it through Calculus 2 in college last spring.

Cost, families not allowing it, degradation of the corpse for older players. Hopefully they develop a test that works on living players at some point.
In the meantime, I'm sure they will be trying to get permission to test more players after they die, conduct studies on retired players, etc.

My son has played contact since first grade - 5 years. The attitudes of coaches has changed. The equipment has improved. The tackling techniques have been adjusted. And the rules have been tightened up with a focus on safety.
Nothing can compare to football for the combination of physical toughness and mental stimulation. It's the greatest game. I don't believe my son is at any significant risk beyond what is acceptable for an active kid.

That decision is made by the family. And today most the families who submit the brain for research have knowledge of him having multiple concussions or mental issues when they got older
Is it an issue that needs to taken seriously and do further research on? Absolutely. Are the percentages of brains actually studied who have CTE skewed in one direction? Yes

Exactly, that's my point. The only brains that are tested are the ones with CTE, and they know it.

chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
It means either dumb people are attracted to football or football makes them dumber or both.
