She was on TV a long time before she met Frank Gifford. She was the like a singing Vannah White on Name That Tune in the 70s. Live with Regis and Kathie Lee pre-dates her marriage to Gifford.

I know she was established nationally by HeeHaw but she was very much married to Gifford when her and Regis went national. Shortly afterwards she got annoying with all the talk about their newborns. I remember the break from her was always well placed as Joy Philbin wasn't a 5 day a week sidekick for her husband but a great fill-in.
Not to get too far off topic, she had only pulled shows up. NBC would have been screwed with the Megyn Kelly situation if KLG hadn't helped Hoda establish herself enough to where they had a viable alternative. Compare that to the Diva who slowly took power from Regis/producers and has been through at least 3 full time co-hosts.

Kathie Lee Johnson (later Gifford) joined Philbin officially on June 24, 1985. Their chemistry proved to be successful as The Morning Show soon became number 1 in the market and went on to debut in national syndication on September 5, 1988, when the title was changed to Live with Regis and Kathie Lee
