I don't know how I feel about that. My likes and dislikes definitely change all the time.. and they are definitely influenced by society.

I hate 50 Shades simply because the type of women who love it annoy me.. which I know is insane. I hate something I've never even read (and I refuse to read it) because the type of people who like it make assume I'll hate it.

FWIW, I know that there are airheaded women who are into the whole 50 Shades/Pinterest type of crap... the type of woman who orders Malibu and Diet.. who goes crazy over Melting Pot.. who listens to top 40.. who floods social media with quotes and photos..

But is that really the norm? Is that what "women of today" are?

I am 45 and neither me nor any of my close friends fit your description. I don't even know what Melting Pot and Malibu and diet are. Although, I do see younger women (and men) embracing the "look at me" way of life.

On another note, anyone remember that Enjoli perfume commercial from the 70's? The hot woman singing that she can bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan?? That commercial idealized the feminist view of marriage. That a woman can do it all: work, raise kids, be sexy all the time and smell good while doing it. That ideal is simply not attainable for most people. When either or both spouses realize that most of the time the bacon isn't fried up, it comes from a drive-thru; and doing a great job at work and home are often mutually exclusive; frustration sets in and it's taken out on the spouse. This isn't what people see on FB either, they see all this perfect shite on their "friends" pages and think - why can't this be us??
In short, I think people's expectations about marriage are simply too high. Couple that with the difficulty of choosing an appropriate mate and the marriage is doomed to fail.

I have been married almost 23 years (been with Mr. Mercy on and off for 27) while there have been a couple of bumps in the road, we still love and respect and want each other. I I will never say that my marriage is perfect, but it's good, and I thank God for that every single day.
Despite the contrarians, there are good marriages out there, they probably just don't look that good on FB.

Thanks for reading my essay!

this thread's all over the place anyway .. threads jump the tracks on here because they don't hold attention .. if the thread is good, the hijack gets skipped over and the topic continues .. if the sidebar is more interesting to most than the topic .. it turns into this .. it's pretty simple ... i highly doubt someone could hijack the tragic theatre shooting thread because all are zero'ed in on the subject .. this one? not so much ..

No one is going to hijack a serious thread of that nature, the admins won't allow it, as evident with Chris and PJ in the Micky thread.

And a poster or posters with longevity can easily hijack threads because mindless posters are intrigued by longevity posters. It's weird.

because, imo, anyone who isn't saying the usual bitches are crazy will be picked apart as cherry picking. There really hasn't been a great point made. (why I was wondering your opinion, bc when you do have one they're typically well thought out)

how old are you? If you can't accept that someone currently involved in the 20 something dating world would know better than you, then you're either trolling or being intentionally obtuse.

Yes, because life experience means nothing. You can't really believe that someone that's been thru the dating life and seen the other side of it doesn't know more about dating than someone who's in the midst of it. Ever heard of the phrase "can't see the forest for the trees?"

You sound like my fifteen year old nephew giving me life advice.

I personally don't know any woman who likes 50 shades. I know the older women crowd are intrigued by it. But whose to say in 10 years you wouldn't have read it or something like it by then.

people are just intrigued by entertainment .. entertainment is largely spur of the moment .. most are here for a laugh or two, or to just get away for a bit .. if they want to argue for 117 pages about who has the greatest marriage on the OT, they'll do it .. this thread is still on topic .. and, even though it is a joke, the comments made to LL were somewhat relevant to the subject matter and not an actual hijack .. hats off to her and jones for laughing about it, because it really isn't that big of a deal since neither are married .. it's not all about post count .. someone with 134 posts could have jumped in and said the same things and people would have hopped the tracks temporarily ..

This is why you never marry a girl that is out of your league! Marry a girl that is lucky to have you and she won't cheat. Save the hot girls for a side piece fellas.

Meh. We'd have about 2 pages discussing whose alter they are. I'll quit being a hypocrite and get back on thread topic

You know, I wonder if the wife in that picture works? A relationship where both mom and dad works is extremely more stable than a relationship where just the husband works.

I actually agree with this in most cases, but I also believe there are good women/men out there who would never cheat. When a woman has that much free time and her husband is "always working", that can be a very dangerous thing. Social media multiplies that danger times 373746484374.

It is. And I admit.. one of my dearest friends loves it. She loves it so much that she ruined her 8-year relationship because she wanted a real life Christian Grey type of relationship.

There definitely are women out there like Pirate King describes. And I guess stereotypes are formed from the loudest voices..

I just hate the whole 'bitches be crazy' stuff because it encourages stupidity.. even pushes men who don't really think that way to say those things. Not all men are desperate to "escape" their wives constantly.. I hate that we joke that it's the case.

Not every women cheats on their husband with a black man. Not every marriage produces kids. Not every marriage has a single income. Lots of factors play into divorces or successful marriages. None of it based on millennial societal trends, imo.

Definitely. Marriages evolve, and if you keep waiting for this ideal movie script type of romance to pan out then you're going to be waiting a long time. It's seeing your wife deliver your child, and being there when she's not showered and sobbing because she's exhausted. It's being there with your husband when he loses his job, and you have to take on a second job to make ends meet. It's seeing your spouse at their worst and their best. Sometimes you have a movie script kind of day. Sometimes it can last longer, but between that is going to be the wife who is griping at her husband after he comes home from golfing. It's the husband who wonders why his wife is living in sweat pants and can't look like she did when she was 20. But you stay. Not because you're unhappy and just figure being miserable with someone is better than being miserable alone. You stay because you love each other, and even more, you realize that you go through shite times together and it'll clear. You go through it all together. And I personally love it. My marriage isn't perfect. My life is far from it, even though obv I'm going to put fun pictures up on FB. I'll also be the first to admit that 10 min after I took a pic of my 2 year old being cute she turned into a major a-hole.

So, stuff like what the OP put is something you can look at and chuckle but it's not my life. Sorry if it's someone else's. If you don't figure out that the fairy tale evolves into different genres then you're fricked.
