While this is certainly true of all of them in the end - when you examine the progression/evolution - most of them do not start out killing (although some do) - most start out with sexual deviancy - and then it escalates to violence and ultimately to murder. I mean, they're getting off on the violence and murder - compulsively.

There's a study out there by some psychologist that shows very strong links between serial killers and the following three thing (in combination):

1. Sexual or physical abuse as a child
2. some type of brain injury
3. mental illness

His argument is that someone with these 3 things in common is much much more likely to become a psychopath and/or serial killer. I can't seem to find the data right now, but it is interesting.

A recent study has demonstrated that 20 out of 31 confessed killers are diagnosed as mentally ill. Out of that 20, 64% have frontal lobe abnormalities. (1) A thorough study of the profiles of many serial killers shows that many of them had suffered sever head injuries (to the frontal lobe) when they were children.

This has to be the most obvious thing said, ever, about serial killers

Seems like it, yet we have people even in this thread talking a bout porn as a cause.

You're probably right that my FBI number is way low. I just know there are active serial killers right now.

There was a hooker that killed one just a few weeks ago before he really got started. I think he had 3 before she killed him.

This guy?

Neal Falls

quote:

The victim, who is being called "Heather" by investigators, fought back so hard, police in Charleston, West Virginia said, that her attacker -- who police now believe may be linked to other crimes -- lost control of his gun.

Heather grabbed the weapon and blindly fired it, killing 45-year-old Neal Falls in self-defense, police said.

Heather, who met Falls after connecting via the escort section of backpage.com, was not charged in the incident.

Because the offender died during the crime, "our case is closed," according to Lt. Steve Cooper, chief of detectives of the Charleston, West Virginia, Police Department.

quote:

But while the West Virginia part of the story might be over, what police discovered in the trunk of Falls' car has investigators in other states wondering if he could be linked to other unsolved cases involving escorts.

Cooper said Falls had what police are calling a "kill kit," which included four sets of handcuffs, an ax, a machete, bulletproof vests, knives, a box cutter, a large container of bleach, and a large number of trash bags.

Police say it's unlikely this was the 45-year-old Falls' first violent crime.

The FBI said Tuesday that while there is no information that connects him with any unsolved killings, it will explore the possibility.

quote:

"I knew he was there to kill me," Heather told CNN affiliate WCSH, "I could tell he had already done something because he said he was going to prison for a long time."

Police said Falls also carried a list of about 10 women -- all escorts in West Virginia -- along with their ages and phone numbers. Those women are all alive and have not had any previous contact with Falls, Cooper said.

The nature of the crimes and where the crimes occurred have also given officials pause.

In 2005, Falls lived in Las Vegas, the same year four women who were working as escorts in the area disappeared. Their dismembered bodies were later discovered in Illinois.

One of those women, Lindsay Marie Harris, was 21 when she disappeared from Henderson, Nevada, in May 2005. Her legs were found in Springfield, Illinois, three weeks later.

shite. I guess these parasites really are still out there. While today's day and age is much easier for predators with internet/social media, its also seems like it'd be harder to hide under the radar.

Ace Midnight said it gave them an outlet. Not that is caused it. It could, possibly, be a way for them to manage their urges somewhat.

He also said it is a theory of his, not a fact backed by research. Honestly, I could see it working for a short period, but eventually the urge to hurt others would get too strong.

Modern law enforcement, medicine, and technology have led to more getting caught or being controlled before they get huge "Bundy-esque" numbers.

DNA alone has probably stopped the most before their numbers get huge IMO. And there's medicine that has helped people with severe mental issues to control them a little more.

But the evil is still out there. There are a lot of serial killers. Prostitutes, children, and other vulnerable victims go missing every day in this country. Luckily, as a fairly big, young, and in shape male, I am at the lowest risk for being a victim.

Remember back when coffee used to be popular? Like everyone was drinking it all the time. I wonder when that fad died out.....

This quote pops up a lot on Google.

quote:

John Douglas, a former chief of the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit and author of "Mind Hunter," says, "A very conservative estimate is that there are between 35 and 50 active serial killers in the United States" at any given time.

That's pretty accurate, and when you intertwine violence into your sexual desires, it becomes compulsive behavior. Murder and sex become the same need. Naturally, you have a problem empathize and have a low valuation of human life to murder numerous people again and again, but I do think a lot of them fight the need, but it always wins over. Who wants to risk the death penalty or life in prison, Joel Rifkin interviews are fascinating and you really get a sense of his urge and compulsion to kill.

John Douglas, the grandfather of Serial Killer profiling, estimates between 35-50 are functioning at any given time in the US.

The ones killing prostitutes are just one kind. Most of them consider their actions to be societal cleansing.

I have also read before that it is estimated that there are two active in the New Orleans area right now. An estimate is still a guess though.

Did anything ever come out of those dancers disappearing and the remains washing up on the beach in MS? I remember threads about that on here a while back.

The greasy ones tend to target prostitutes as I'd guess they hop right in with you.

I don't know. I do know that N.O. is a prime hunting ground for SK's due to there being so many easy targets during the night. SK's usually target a specific type. Every type is available in the greater New Orleans area when darkness provides cover.

The three things that most SK's have in common in their beginnings are peeing the bed to a more advanced age than normal, arson or some kind of fire fascination at a young age, and cruelty to animals.

Off topic, but me and friends have pulled up backpage hookers ads in random cities, for laughs, and without a doubt, the West Virginia hookers were without a doubt the funniest/scariest. They're worth taking a peek. They were that hilariously awful.

Was there ever any progress made, or did they ever release any more about the Jennings serial killer?

Most of the girls were prostitutes that had ties to one specific crack house that was frequented by some of the local LEO's.
