So I was thinking the other day about the age of serial killers

And how they seem to have been extinct. You know, the Dahmer/Bundy/Gein types. Well, then I stumbled across this dude this morning:

Howell allegedly told an inmate that his first victim was a woman who he raped in the van before strangling her and hitting her in the head with a hammer, according to the warrant. He allegedly said he slept next to the woman's body in the van and called her his "baby" before cutting off her fingertips, breaking her bottom jaw and disposing of her remains.
The arrest warrant further claims Howell bragged in prison about strangling a man he initially believed was a woman; Howell allegedly killed the man after his wig fell off during a sexual encounter. He allegedly told an inmate he also killed a prostitute after raping her with a shock absorber.
In 2005, Howell pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Arizmendi: His arrest warrant for that crime states that he beat her with a hammer in the van, records show.

People will always do things compulsively, I'm not sure why you thought serial killers were going extinct. In fact, it's scary to think how many there may actually be

Medication is probably helping some folks fight off compulsions better than in the past.
I mean, white guys between the ages of 25 and 50 are still the predators and street-level prostitutes are still the prey - law enforcement and the prostitutes themselves have gotten better at spotting and interdicting these guys before they get going. And, frankly, online porn - probably is a net positive for society in this specific area, for every 1 predator it might trigger, it probably offers an outlet to 3 to 5 others (just spitballing - I don't have any research to support this contention, but I think it is a reasonable assertion) - and combined, again, with better mental health medication, this has probably cut down on the number of serial killers, extant.
These advances in medication, along with law enforcement being more attuned to profiling (a perfectly valid law enforcement tool - if used properly, despite its unfair demonization as a tool of oppression) of serial killers, and a heightened awareness among the prostitutes themselves - these combination of factors is the likely answer to why there appear to be fewer active serial killers at present.
(ETA: Also, DNA testing allows for the connection of the typically sexual nature of the offenses to specific predators, earlier in their careers, IMHO).

I think it has had negative effects. Overall, perhaps even a net negative. I'm not making that case, either way in this thread. I'm merely sugesting this is a narrow area where it may have some positive effects, as well. I mean, compulsive people need an outlet.

Israel Keyes was active in the past few years.
I imagine there are a hell of a lot of them out there. Missing persons reports, unsolved cases. They just haven't made a big mistake, yet. Modern killers have learned from crime shows and are much more meticulous about their actions.

That's the thing, though. You study these guys and they didn't wake up one day as "Ted Bundy, serial killer". It started by sexual compulsion they fulfill with a prostitute. Then, typically, it follows a pattern of escalation, some more gradual and some more rapid, but fairly soon, it expands to some level of violence. Even if the intent is to do no permanent harm, the victim is a witness, a "valueless" (to the killer) prostitute (or some prey on children, they're more complicated, generally) - and they're killed to cover up the initial crime.
Then it gets really weird for most of them after that. And their patterns clearly show compulsion. Many go months (perhaps years) between victims, and some are able to de-escalate their compulsion themselves to avoid detection and capture. I wasn't suggesting anything other than an outlet other than prostitution might keep some of those with the potential from getting that first kill to begin with.

I think the FBI estimates there are like 3 or 4 active serial killers out there right now even

That's possible. I do believe porn and prostitution keep rape on a downward slope. However, I think serial killers are more interested in the kill. Many used prostitutes as their prey.
I have a feeling killers have wised up and are being much more cautious about their activities.

While this is certainly true of all of them in the end - when you examine the progression/evolution - most of them do not start out killing (although some do) - most start out with sexual deviancy - and then it escalates to violence and ultimately to murder. I mean, they're getting off on the violence and murder - compulsively.
