Smoking tobacco the proper way is a lost art

That's definitely debatable, but not really since smoking a pipe is notably less trashy than hand rolled cigs.

One of the believed links to cancer in tobacco is the chemicals in the fertilizer that are necessary to grow tobacco. You can't run from it if that's the case.
