Never heard such a thing in my life.

If you've really got money to burn, screw it, build a finished basement.

Depends on the soil. Pier & beam is more consistently stable. A slab floats on the soil. It’s the reason places like Dallas have to water the foundation in the dry summer months. Pier & beam is usually more expensive, but worth the peace of mind imo.

Slab or pier and beam foundation

Have you ever seen a 150 year old pier and beam house? Yes you prolly have. Now go look at a 50 year old slab house! No comparison! Slab houses are extremely prone to termite damage as well..... But I'm old school..... and by the way they are neck and neck cost wise

Soil sample is crucial but I would go with a pier beam.

Interesting to read this discussion when most houses in the north have basements.

frick a slab. Any settlement, you're fricked. Broken plumping, cracked floors, flooding during heavy rains.

I bought a 20 year old home on a slab... couldn't be happier. Any settling is done and it is not possible to flood here. A slab is better for heating and cooling purposes.

Pier and beam is much more expensive in most applications. More issues with settlement than a slab, greater chance for termite damage, increased chance for rot, water mitigation’s issues with water pooling under the house
